Basic History

Personal History Selcar of the line of Valdore was born on Romulus in the Romulan capital city of Ki Baratan on Stardate 24598.46. His early childhood was somewhat lonely with his mother – a Commander within the Tal Shiar, a fact Selcar would not learn for years – away on a variety of missions for the Empire, and his father’s time being spent mostly in the Hall of State. As Romulan children rarely interact with each other outside of educational facilities and the occasional test to see which child can out-manipulate the other the only real companionship Selcar had as a youth was his pet Set’leht Marika, and his families personal seneschal Rivin. His youth was filled with stores of the great men and women of his noble line, in particular the line’s namesake and Selcar’s Great Grandfather Valdore. One of the few lessons his father ever imparted on him was that the greatest thing to remember about Valdore was not his military leadership during the Earth-Romulan War, or his covert efforts against the other races of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Rather his father said it was important to “remember that as a senator he believed in a better future for our people, one without distrust and war. It must always be the priority of us all to become the change we wish to see in the galaxy and to make it a better place for those who come after us.” This lesson was ended with Selcar’s father commanding him to never speak of what he had been taught that day as it would lead to all of there deaths or imprisonment. In 2357 when Selcar was 10 his mother gave birth to another male whom the family named Trajan. With his parents absent most of the time it fell on Selcar to raise and educate his younger brother and the two became close as the years wore on. A few years later in 2366 Selcar left home for the Imperial Academy to begin training for a life of military and public service. He graduated a full year early and earned a commission within the Romulan military, the only member of his family to attend the graduation was his brother. When his mother died in a “training accident” in 2371 Selcar had already advanced rapidly through the ranks to that of Centurion (the Starfleet equivalent of a Lieutenant Commander). He was afforded no time to greave as the next few years would see him in constant combat situations during the Dominion Wars, during which he became highly decorated including earning the Imperial Raptor (Similar to the Christopher Pike medal of Valor). Following the war he was promoted to Subcommander and managed to make time to attend his brothers graduation from the Imperial academy prior to taking his post as XO aboard the I.R.W. Valdore (which he considered an honor) under Commander Donatra in 2377. In 2379 Selcar lost his father to the coup d'état of Shinzon and was present aboard the Valdore when the vessel lent aide to the U.S.S. Enterprise-E in its efforts to destroy Shinzon’s vessel the Scimitar. A year later he was approached by agents of the Tal Shiar. It was then that he learned of what his mother’s real profession was and also about the events of her death. He agreed to join the Intelligence organization and began training immediately. He excelled at counter-intelligence, demolitions, and close quarters and hand to hand combat; although his greatest talents lay in starship tactics and ship to ship combat. He was approached several times by agents of Donatra who asked for his support but he repeatedly told them that he would not act in any way that would continue to aid in the destabilization of his people despite the fact the he admitted he was certainly no fan of Tal’aura or her puppet Senate. In 2383 he was present for the food riots in Ki Baratan which he called “the senseless slaying of 2000 innocents whose only crime was wanting to eat that day”. When the Tal Shiar began assaults against the noble houses in 2386 Selcar was enraged and requested to be transferred off the homeworld. His request was agreed to and he was placed on Earth at the Romulan Embassy as head of internal security. While on Earth he became fascinated by humans and there culture and became enamored with ancient Earth history. He even became skilled at the human game of pool which he played on a regular basis, going so far as to replicate himself a pool table and cue for his private chambers. In 2387 word of the destruction of Romulus reaches Selcar who immediate begin tracking down his brother, whom he is relieved to discover was offword at the time of the planet’s annihilation. Over the next few years, as in fighting tears his people apart Selcar began feeling more and more disillusioned with the future his people were facing. In 2389 he uses the chaos of the empire to disappear and travels to the Romulan colony of Talvath to aid them in whatever way he can. A year later in 2390 when Talvath requests Federation protection Selcar is amongst those who push for the colony to petition for full membership within the Federation. During this time he works closely with the Commander of the U.S.S. Victory, Commander Viktor Dragov. The two become close friends as they attempt to get Talvath the protection and resources it needs to remain safe from Klingon encroachment. In 2391 Taris takes command of the splintered factions of the Romulan Empire and any hope of Talvath joining the Federation falls through. Selcar receives word from an anonymous source that the new Romulan regime plans to make an example of those who would seek aid from outside sources and that Selcar has been named an enemy of the state. Realizing that his hope for a better – more peaceful – future for his people will never come to pass under Taris, Selcar requests asylum aboard the U.S.S. Victory and is granted it. He spends the next 5 years serving aboard the Victory as an advisor before smuggling himself back into Romulan space in an attempt to boost popular opinion of a Romulan – Federation Alliance. For three years he moves amongst the various worlds of the Romulan people trying to gain support for his proposed alliance and although he gains some supporters (including his anonymous friend who continues to aid him whenever possible) his efforts are for naught. Once word that the Vulcans knew of the impending destruction of Romulus and did nothing about it surfaces any hope of the Romulans joining with the Federation in any capacity seems unlikely. Selcar, himself is enraged by the findings but realizes that the Federation is the best hope for the future of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Still as he records in a personal log “I shall never be able to forgive the Vulcans for what they have done, or rather what they failed to do. Every time I look at one of there faces all I can see is the face of someone who murdered billions”. Once more escaping Romulan space, Selcar finds his way back to the Victory in time to celebrate the New Year and New Century with the crew of a Federation starship which he reflects are the people he feels closest too. Following the celebrations he speaks to the now Captain Dragov about petitioning for Federation Citizenship. It takes nearly two years but at the end of 2401 Selcar is granted full Federation citizenship. He wastes no time and immediately requests Captain Dragov to write him a letter of recommendation to enter Starfleet Academy. Shortly thereafter he receives word from his mysterious contact that he has been placed on the Tal Shiar’s top hit list and is being considered one of the greatest threats to Romulan security. After another year of waiting aboard the Victory word arrives that Selcar has been accepted into Starfleet Academy and in 2403 the Victory makes its way back to Earth so Selcar can begin his training. The Academy proves to be a challenge for Selcar who must unlearn everything he learned as a Romulan officer. He excels at his academic studies but socially he is an outcast. Despite the adversity of being the first Romulan in Starfleet, on Stardate 84975.12 Selcar graduates from Starfleet Academy with high honors and receives his commission as a Starfleet tactical officer.
