Being from outside the Federation and from a race of slave traders and other questionable trade practices, she had to battle her way to make it to Federation space, and then had to find work wherever she could merely to survive. Her species, gender, and exquisite looks brought her a range of unwanted attention and potential trouble starting from a youthful age. But she also eventually learned to exploit her powerful and enticing pheromones to put herself in positions to learn, develop and hone more useful and marketable technological skills from a variety of unsuccessful suitors; much to their dismay

She worked for a while as an Engineer's apprentice on the Beta VI colony and later as a science lab technician on several sectors of the Martian colony.  Her high aptitude, quick-minded diagnostic  abilities  and skills in engineering and science caught the attention of  Starship Captain Theron Burke who witnessed her resolve several environmental and mechanical system malfunctions more efficiently and effectively than their hired in-house engineers. He later arranged to have her take a Starfleet Academy pre-entrance exam; despite the initial objections to allow this uneducated Orion even the opportunity to participate.  She outscored all of the other examinees. With Captain Burke's official sponsorship and special permission granted from several Academy professors, she was granted admittance to Starfleet Academy within one year.

Only medical records that exist are from her time in the Academy.

The biggest lesson she learned during her time at the Academy was the skill to tone down and control her naturally provocative and alluring manner. Initially, she wreaked havoc in her dormitory because all of the males there lusted for her and made their intentions blatantly obvious.  With her innate skill of seduction and  highly potent pheromones she accelerated the metabolisms of males of many species attending the Academy, raising their adrenaline production to dangerous levels which caused aggression and, ultimately, a form of delusion. Its most significant effect was to make them susceptible to suggestion. This also alienated her from the majority of the female cadets and professors who felt a bit threatened by her charismatic appeal.

Eventually, she realized that if she was going to make it through the academy, she was going to have to consciously change her persona and her pheromone output levels. Fortunately, she was befriended by a Vulcan female and male cadets who gave her a Vulcan meditation lamp and helped train her with a variety of extensive exercises to control her movements and pheromone output levels to almost human levels. Then by toning down her dress and mannerisms, she gained an even more respectable presence and professionalism; although her overall beauty just could not be hidden.
