Family History
M'k'n'zy of Calhoun (Mackenzie Calhoun) was born to Gr'zy in the city of Calhoun on the Danteri-occupied planet Xenex in 2334. M'k'n'zy had one elder brother, D'ndai. When he was fourteen seasons old, M'k'n'zy and his brother witnessed their father being beaten to death by Danteri soldiers in Calhoun's public city square. By the time he was nineteen seasons old, M'k'n'zy had become a warlord amongst his people and had eventually succeeded in freeing Xenex from their Danteri overlords. M’k’n’zy is seen as almost a god by the Xenexian people. He was likened to Alexander the Great by Captain Jean-Luc Picard of a visiting Federation starship, the USS Stargazer. Picard urged M'k'n'zy to join Starfleet, warning him that things would not go well if he allowed the climax of his life to occur in his youth.
M’k’n’zy joined Starfleet and eventually took command of the USS Excalibur (Ambassador-class) with then Commander Elizabeth Shelby as his first officer. In early 2376, the Excalibur was destroyed in a warp core breach caused by a computer virus. The entire crew was able to escape until the ship was destroyed. A Galaxy-class USS Excalibur was commissioned originally with Captain Elizabeth Shelby in command until it was discovered that Captain Calhoun was alive. Captain Shelby took command of the USS Trident (Galaxy-class) while Calhoun took command of the new USS Excalibur.
Elizabeth Shelby is a highly ambitious Starfleet Officer. Shelby's first assignment out of the Academy was as an ensign aboard the USS Repulse. She served on four other ships following that assignment, and by 2366, was a full grade lieutenant serving as chief engineer of the USS Yosemite. By 2366, Lieutenant Commander Shelby had changed to the command track and was placed in charge of Starfleet's defensive planning for a potential Borg invasion. Once the Borg attack came, Shelby proved herself to be an extremely capable officer. Following the destruction of the Borg cube and Picard's return as captain of the Enterprise, Shelby returned to Starfleet Command as a recently promoted Commander to lead the task force that would rebuild the fleet following the disastrous Battle of Wolf 359.
Eventually, Commander Shelby was assigned as first officer to the USS Excalibur until she was destroyed in 2376. Following the loss of the Excalibur, Shelby was promoted to captain and given command of the USS Exeter. While she initially hoped this new ship would provide a more by-the-book environment, Shelby found her command style had significantly influenced by her time serving with Calhoun, and that the Exeter was not a good fit for her. When the new USS Excalibur-A was launched in late 2376, Shelby was reassigned as its commander, with Calhoun's old crew intact.
However, at the dedication of the Excalibur-A, Mackenzie Calhoun reappeared, after having been marooned on the planet Yakaba. Calhoun immediately proposed marriage to Shelby. After punching him, Shelby accepted. They were married on the bridge of the Excalibur-A in a ceremony officiated by Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
Following their Starfleet wedding ceremony, Shelby and Calhoun traveled to Xenex, where Shelby underwent a series of physical and psychological trials before they could be wed under Xenexian tradition. After their return from Xenex, Shelby took command of the USS Trident and was assigned to patrol Sector 221-G along with the Excalibur. Shelby was also instrumental in revealing the telepathic manipulation of the Federation by member species, the Selelvians. This revelation led to a short war between the Federation and the Selelvians, in alliance with the Tholian Assembly. Shelby and the Trident served with distinction during this brief conflict. Following the war with the Selelvians, Shelby found herself promoted to Rear Admiral Lower Half and in command of Space Station Bravo.
Xyon of Calhoun is the son of and Catrine of Calhoun. He was conceived on the world of Xenex in the year 2354. His birth was either in that year or the following, 2355. Catrine was a widow who invoked an ancient tradition that required the leader of a community to provide an heir to a slain soldier's family.
Moke was the adopted son of Starfleet Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. Calhoun adopted Moke after the death of his mother, Rheela. Moke's natural father was one of the Beings known as Zeus. It is currently unknown if Moke inherited any of his natural father's abilities, but it seems likely. Zeus disapproves of the boy's name, preferring 'Thor'.
Personal History
David Gr’zy Calhoun was born in 2385 on Bravo Station. Being a Starfleet brat, he spent his childhood years between Bravo Station with his mother and the USS Excalibur with his father. Bravo Station and the USS Excalibur provided excellent educational facilities and practical learning experiences. While spending time with his mother, David learned a great deal about Starfleet operations and seeing the big picture. His mother, coming from an engineering background, allowed David to gain a solid basic foundation in engineering. While on board the Excalibur with his father, David studied starship operations, engineering, tactical and security. While on board, Mackenzie would spend countless hours teaching his son the art of hand to hand combat to include swordplay and Mackenzie’s skill of only being seen when he wanted to. It was during this combat training that David noticed he had a sixth sense regarding imminent danger; he just knew when danger was near and often could react before the danger presented itself. After discussing with Mackenzie, David discovered that his father has the same uncanny sense. Mackenzie also helped David develop and hone the skill of being able to regulate his own body temperature.
When David turned 13, he traveled to Xenex and stayed with a friend of the family in Calhoun, the town where his father came from. Having a father that is a renowned warlord and liberator of the Xenexian people came with certain clout. The people of Calhoun continued David’s education by teaching him survival skills in the terrain of Xenex. His combat skills were further developed as well as his tracking abilities. Before leaving Xenex, David underwent The Search for Always, a traditional Xenexian rite of passage in a very inhospitable place on Xenex known as the Pit. Before David departed Xenex, he had made his own Xenexian short sword.
In 2401, at the age of 16, while David was visiting his father on the Excalibur, David accompanied an away team to an unexplored planet near Sector 221-G when the away team came under attack by Romulans. The main group of the away team was captured while the USS Excalibur was kept occupied by Romulan Warbirds. David and a science ensign were off scouting when they discovered a group of 12 Romulan centurions holding the other 5 away team members; all 12 Romulans were disabled and the away team was ready to beam up when the Excalibur had dealt with the Warbirds thanks to the combat skills of one David Calhoun.
In 2404, with his father on a leave of absence from his captaincy following the decommission of the Excalibur, David started his career as a cadet at Starfleet Academy. Because of his upbringing, David found his studies relatively easy, though science was not his strongest suit. David became captain of the Academy wrestling team and the track team. As a sophomore, David joined Red Squad and excelled at piloting and by the time he graduated, David was rated as a level 6 pilot. In 2407, David graduated 5th in his class and was the top tactical studies cadet.
Upon graduation, Ensign David Calhoun was assigned to the new Sovereign class USS Excalibur, under the command of captain DeSalle, partially because his parents pulled a few strings. David spent his first two years as the bridge tactical officer on gamma shift and a security team leader. During those two years, David continued to train with his father on Xenex, honing his sense for danger and combat skills. David continued to push himself with his studies of starship operations and tactical systems and even became a level 7 rated pilot. At times, Ensign Calhoun would take an extra shift at the helm of the Excalibur.
In 2410, as Captain M'k'n'zy Calhoun was brought back to once again command the Excalibur since Captain DeSalle was promoted to Rear Admiral, David Calhoun earned himself a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Lt JG Calhoun felt that it was time he branch off from the influence of his parents and requested reassignment to Lotus Fleet.
