Evshell's Adventure in 3D Modelling [graphically demanding]

Postby Evshell » Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:23 am

So, I've dabbled in 3D modelling in the past, but I figured I'd really take a few hours and try to learn the application Hexagon which I got as part of a DAZ Studio package of design tools.

So after staying up too late last night and taking some time to follow along with a video tutorial I found online, I was able to basically duplicate what the guy did in the tutorial and thought I'd share it to start off a (hopefully) series of images that I will be posting in the weeks to come.

My goal is to eventually be able to fully render the USS Horizon at some point since we have no good examples to pull from using STO, but that is a long ways off.

I haven't dabbled in texture mapping yet, but that is my planned next move after creating a ship from scratch as opposed to following a video.

Looks like a good start to me.  I can see this is going to turn out well.
"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based! And if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform! " - Captain Picard from TNG Episode 'The First Duty'

I agree with Sorripto.

Funny, I was fancying doing the same myself for 2013, also motivated by the fact that our USSHorizon does not exist. Oh I can do much with copy-paste for still pictures (as seen on the banner above) but my ambition is to be able to produce animated images of it.

Hugely ambitious for someone who never dabbed in CGI before, I know... but hey, everyone started somewhere!

Evshell will certainly beat me to it. So I will follow this with keen interest.

Constitution-class Rendering Without Texture

Postby Evshell » Wed Jan 02, 2013 2:21 am

So here's my next project that I've been working on since I certainly have a lot of defined resources of this ship to pull from as I learn!

Next step is to figure out the process of adding the texture and then try to get the lighting right by adding translucent textures with lighting within the ship itself to show things like the ends of the nacelles properly.

This time I used the attachment function on the forums, which cuts it off significantly, but you should be able to click on it with the mouse to see full-size.
