The "Magic Cloak", as you put it, isn't without precedent. Remember that the Klingons had one in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

True, however that one had a fatal flaw that was exploited after only a few minutes. We can assume that the remans solved the problem of gas emissions tracking because Gerodi didn even try to utilize that strategy.

Re: Starship Smackdown!
Yeah... maybe that makes it a "cheating starship" as Niomo put it, but my point was just that there were plenty of times in every series and movie where they've had to make something seemingly unbeatable in order to add tension. And had they used the same emissions tracking that they used in TUC, it would've been stale.
None of this is meant to sway anyone for or against the Scimitar, just an observation on the singling out of the Scimitar as being "cheating". As they didn't all die and eventually found a way to kill it, It's not that different from any other enemy capital ship they've encountered. For example, the same could easily have been said for the Borg Cube back in the days when "Q Who" originally aired.

Wow, even as a purely 1-on-1 competition, the Miranda squeezed out a victory of 4-3!!
I'd like to point out that we are at a turning point and halfway through Phase 1 of our competition. Once we have completed the next 16 votes, we will have determined the competitors for Phase 2, the Sweet Sixteen of the Starship Smackdown!!
For the next half, we'll start off back near the top of the bracket with a race between the Federation Galaxy and the Romulan Valdore!!!
Federation Galaxy
Specifications
The Galaxy-class should need no introduction. Along with the Constitution-class, the Galaxy is one of the most famous and familiar starships in Federation history. The USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D made this ship so well-known as the Flagship of Starfleet. The 8-year run of the Enterprise-D, starting in 2363 and ending in its fateful destruction that saved the entire crew in 2371, showed the depth and capabilities of the Galaxy-class, not only in combat, but defense, diplomacy, and its ability to protect the civilian population on board with the saucer separation function. The impressive 42 decks were able to take on up to 15,000 people, which means it could evacuate entire civilian populations from any smaller planets that were nearing destruction. The armament was nothing to sneeze at either with 12 Type X phaser arrays and 2 Type III photon torpedo tubes (one fore, one aft).
Romulan Valdore
Specifications Unknown
Not much is known about the Romulan Valdore, due to Romulan secrecy, but this impressively large ship was almost a kilometer from wingtip to wingtip and sported a powerful set of disruptor banks and at least one photon torpedo tube that was able to fire up to 4 torpedoes at once. The modern versions in 2409 upgraded the photon torpedoes to the hull-burning plasma type. In terms of design, this vessel was like an upgraded Bird-of-Prey.

Re: Starship Smackdown!
Hmmm...the voting timeline for the Miranda vrs Scimitar was only 3 days; cut short for what reason? This was the lowest-voting poll due to the very short turn-around time.
At any rate...since we're moving on early, my vote is Galaxy Class.
Galaxy:
Largest Federation starship; class of the Flagship; long-range/duration explorer, battleship. The design is just majestic; like a Boeing 747...it just flows. All around well-balanced, multi-mission starship.
Valdore:
This is supposedly the most modern design in the Romulan Star Empire, and for a modern design, it was sure disabled quite easily. While the Enterprise E was taking a beating, 2 Valdores are disabled with just a few shots. Heck, even a wing is blown off. While the Valdore is supposed to have an improved cloak and engines (both to travel faster than a D'Deridex and faster while cloaked without being detected), the Valdore is almost like a D'Deridex lite...just 1 wing! Note a big, not as tough, easier to disable/destroy.

Re: Starship Smackdown!
Even if you try ignoring all it's qualities and virtues, beauty and capabilities, it is quite impossible to vote against the second most iconic starship of the entire franchise... especially against ships that served only as cannon fodder in one movie battle.

Re: Starship Smackdown!
I too vote Galaxy Class. The galaxy class has proven that it can take a beating and keep going. The Romulan ships are clearly built for stealth and swarm tactics, so I imagine a one on one fight would not end well for them against a ship that was the workhorse of the Federation for decades.

Evshell wrote:So... it has come to my attention that we had at least one vote for the Scimitar in the top 3, so, since it would not be fair to knock out the Scimitar on the first round due to my whim and change the balance of the original bracket, I'm going to leave this poll up for one more day and then create a real 3-day poll for 1 Scimitar vs 1 Miranda, which will be the one that actually counts... sorry Miranda!
The timeline was declared ahead of time... nobody argued about it when it would've counted...

Re: Starship Smackdown!
I did not see that post Evshell, my mistake. Let's just not have any more of these fake/for fun polls. The real voting should be a standard window for each, unless of course it's a total blow out and it would be your call...which this one is shaping up to be.
