Re: New Science officer STO question
I have two science officers and neither of them have empathy that I'm aware of...one is a Klingon and the other a liberated Borg. I would venture to say that it probably isn't. Your skill point allocation, kit, and bridge officer powers are probably more important.
hope that helps and welcome to Lotus Fleet!

Re: New Science officer STO question
You can most probably choose empathy for any custom alien you make... and use that template to make it look totally Human if you want to.
That's what I did with my own main character, to create an Andorian mutant with the look and attributes I had defined for it. So, he is listed as "alien" but definitely looks like an Andorian (although darker, with pupiless eyes and different antennae).
I have two science characters also and none of them has empathy or anything close to it... and I soloed them up to 50 with no problem at all.
So it,s just up to your personal preferences.

Sadly no race has empathy as a trait save the Betazeds. Its a kind of odd choice because you can have Telepathy and they established they go hand in hand but...eh whatever.
Thank you so much for the advice. I wont worry about it at all then. I was just worried about being locked into a poor choice while I play the character. In several games I believe them when the rules say 'chose what you want it doesnt matter' just to have it matter anyway :/

Re: New Science officer STO question
Which is quite odd from STO's part because Betazoids are NOT empaths; they are telepaths! Only Deanna Troi in ST TNG was an empath and not a telepath because she was only half-Betazoid!
Seems the game designers got quite confused on this issue.
Roddenberry was not, however; he did not want telepaths, precogs and other psionicists on his show because they simply were storybreakers, as shown in this hilarious but very on the spot fan-made episode of TAS:
