Ships at 50

It is illogical to go elsewhere for STO info.

Ships at 50

Postby Hera » Mon Jan 14, 2013 5:54 pm

Hi guys!

Ive had a hard time getting good info on what Fed ships I 'should' look to pick up at 50.  i did get the carrier cause it was something completely different and fun but i need to get more 'srious' with my next few ship purchases.

I was thinking -

DPS is a Tactical Escort Refit (cloaking Defiant)

Science Healing - Carrier?  MU Ship?

Tank Admiral Excel?

I usually try to match the ship choice with the specialization of my officer...

So my VA Science office uses a refit deep space science vessel.
(But he also has a Prometheus and several other types too)

When I first hit 50 on my tac I used a prometheus class, and then later switched to the defiant refit which I've found to be a nice ship for STFs. I've also used the assault carrier (akira refit) they released not that long ago. Now I'm using a Chimera Heavy Destroyer which you won't have access to unless you've hit the veteran reward level for that ship (1000 days I think?)

On my science officer I use a Vesta class which to me is the best science ship out there, but prior to that I was using the intrepid refit.

On my engineer I'm using an Odyssey science variant which has the work bee console which can come in handy while tanking. I've also used the Sovereign, and the assault cruiser refit they released recently (can't remember the name off the top of my head.)

One problem I have is that I hate the hinged wings of the intrepid.  I used it leveling and I wont go back to it unless Im dragged kicking and screaming :P

I agree. It is at least unique. I always like it when they come up with something unique to make a certain class stand out beyond the standard.

There's actually an explanation for why that occurs. I'm not sure if it is canon or not, and maybe just someone trying to apply Treknology to a simple television graphical effect, but it is said that the reason they move when going to warp is to prevent the subspace tearing that was debated in TNG and forced upon them the Warp 6 speed limit. Apparently the Intrepid-class was the first to have this new technology and it's why they had no qualms about going way above that limit to get home.

Then they came up with something that didn't require that motion on all ships after the Intrepid-class.

My Tac 50 is actually in a dreadnaught cruiser and I love it.

Personally, I tend to fly a ship I like, regadless of actual perfomance as I have a large complement of excellent BOFFs and very good gear to put on any ship.

For a long time I used the tier 5 Excelsior class Lakota refit because it's canon, effective and the transwarp capability was very handy. But  currently, although I really like the Odyssey,  I fly a Chimera class because it has escort firepower, cruiser feel yet science maneuvering... and the animation is fun to watch while the design is distinctive (a bit of prestige benefit there) yet still properly Trek (many hate it but to me it's far above almost all the new designs Cryptic ever attempted to have us swallow since game launch!).

But if I were to PvP, I would certainly look very closely at all the game stats and performance reports to get the best out there. So I guess in that case I would most probably go with my Galaxy-X or my fully-geared (3 consoles) Vesta class, or my fully geared (3 consoles) Odyssey, transfering all my good stuff of the Chimera there.

I expect that I will move to the Ambassador class once it comes live... simply because it is my favorite Trek ship of all and I should thus play with it for a good while unless it is not tier 5 and sucks big time!

I have tried almost all tier 5 ships in the game so far in PvE and they all can do the job nicely, especially if you gear one properly and max out your crew. So, unless you favor PvP, I would say; go with your heart.

I may be a bit too driven to details I like...

I now have 2 sets of
Mirror Assault Cruiser
Mirror Star Cruiser
Mirror Reconnaissance Science Vessel
Mirror Deep Space Science Vessel

One for Hera and one for her Mirror when she hits 50 :)

Im loving the DSSV for healing by the looks of it (2 eng and 2 sci boff) and I just love the Star Cruiser's looks.  I think with the Eng and Sci slots on the Star Cruiser it should make a fine tanking ship too.
