According to EW on their post this morning, Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as a main character on the Discovery.

I have watched her work on The Walking Dead, where she plays Sasha Williams. A good choice to continue on the Roddenberry tradition started with Nichele Nichols, only now a Lt. Cmdr main character spot.

That one would be much much better and proper Trek but looks rather advanced for the series' timeframe. I seem to guess some inspiration from Axanar; part of the deal they made?
The images underneath of what looks like the revamped Discovery still makes it look clunky and graceless but a slight improvement over the monstrosity showed last year.

Well they did say that they would redesign things to get out of the 1960's archaic looks. Looks like they're not doing it timidly.
Personally, I can live with big changes in appearances as long as the basic elements and especially the proper spirit are there. So far since DS9 and the last part of Voyager, that's what has been lost (culminating with Abrams' moronic STINOs). And I hope for a morality play action adventure; not Trek in the City or Star Trek Wars.
I'm not much optimistic with their bastard Klingon-Federation star destroyer, their pseudo-avant-garde with the use of the cliche gay character and emphasis on the growing pains of a secondary character to which they don't even give a name. And a space scientist specializing in fungus? Where are they going with this?
