Could use a couple of opinions here: I'm working on a build to replace my outdated (though performing well) 1st generation core i5 processor set up. I'm struggling whether to shoot for an X99 set up with a core i7 5820k processor or go with a Z170 set up with a core i7 4790k processor. 

I'm set on an Intel processor and mostly looking to compare and contrast the two potential set ups. I know the X99 will be DDR4 ram vice DDR3 for the Z170, but I've also read there isn't much of a performance difference between the two. 

The other key here is that upgrading my hardware will likely force me on to Windows 10 (which I've avoided up until this point) to take advantage of the full potential of the newer hardware and probably Win 10 Pro since I want full control over my operating system. 

So, there you have my dilemma...any and all opinions would be appreciated.

Although the 4790 supports integrated graphics where the 5820 does not, i see the 5820 supports DDR4, where the 4790 does not.

I have built many a PC in the past, but I have not built one for myself in a long time. I currently use an ASUS, which came with high end hardware for only a few dollars more than I would have spent buying the parts. Other then the issue with bloatware, most PCs can be bought for not much more than you would spend building one. I am not discouraging you from building one, but I am saying do some price shopping and you might find something that fits your liking.

thank you, and you're probably right. My rig is already custom built though, and I will be able to hold over the graphics card, power supply (I'm relatively certain) and hard drives. I have been looking into some less expensive (read older) hardware than what I originally posted that would still be several steps up from what I'm running now and provide good solid performance including the Z97 generation of motherboards and processors.
