One Star Wars Fan's Comment:

"Abrams was an awful choice for this franchise; the director is known for gutting piecemeal shows that once had meaning, gutting them like a fish.Having already turned the beloved Star Trek franchise into yet another Die Hard clone, with meaningless plot, guns and car chases now detested by millions of Star Trek fans, I have full faith that Abrams can gut Star Wars the same masterful way he did with the latter.Perhaps this is a fitting end to the saga, one now fully licensed and subject to the whims of a corporate board of directors that hasn't a clue. With Abrams' new Star War, we should expect more guns, car chases, hair gel and pointless plots, which seems to be all this director is good at."

As much as I detest Abrams for butchering Star Trek I'm still adopting a wait and see approach. I actually think that Star Wars is probably better suited to Abrams..."flare" for the absurd. (pun completely intended) I'm hoping that with a lot of the original cast, especially someone as respected as Harrison Ford, involved that it won't be a complete disaster.

Yeah, guns (blasters) and car (speeder) chases is a lot of the point of Star Wars already, isn't it? It might work out well. Or it might turn into... wait for it...

Star Wars Episode VII - A False Hope

That's right, I did it...

I will reserve judgement as well and definitely will go see it in theaters anyway.

Nice one Ev!

Oh and, Jureth; we had none other than Leonard Nimoy attached to both Abrams ST movies; didn't do much for us...

On the plus side, SW is Abrams first true love. The problem with his Trek movies is that they are just that; more SW than ST to begin with (minus the asinine storytelling but that is the fault of his writing team Orci & Kurtzman first and foremost so, if he avoids them and these kind of lazy, formula-writing, superficial storytellers with nothing to write about, he should do better). Indeed, the 2009 ST was recognized the world over as Abrams demo reel for his pitch to get SW.

On the down side, he's the quintessential Hollywood producer only out to make money from someone else's established successful creative work.  If he goes again butchering what fans the world over love and exploit what they want just to lure them into another easy made flashy space roller coaster with no story to tell whatsoever, well... SW fans will be cheated just like ST fans were.

The two articles above to be sure are not promising; rehashing old characters with old actors, openly ignoring decades of a rich and universally accepted expanded universe... At least this time Abrams and crew are not lying to SW fans as they did to ST fans (we will revive the original series and bring back the true essence of ST in state of the art form, respect canon and fans, inspire ourselves deeply and faithfully from the decades of established Trek lore...)

At least,SW fans have long ago developped a foolproof defensive mechanism to preserve their beloved universe. Since the infamous SW Christmas Holiday Special and up to the latest prequel trilogy, anything SW fans don't agree with gets the same comment: "Never happened." Contrary to ST fans who loves to try and fit every little mistake, blunder and inconsistency into a rational framework of their universe even at the risk of losing their sanity, SW fans simply go into total denial and move on.

Maybe  a lesson for us ST fans here... But we'll see what Abrams version of SW will get from fans.

My mind is open... but my hopes are held in check.
