1.3 GENERAL OVERVIEW
Editor's Note: History written by Andre Ouellette - based on information found in Memory Beta, Star Trek: A call Of Duty, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek Technical Manual, Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, Star Trek: Deep Space 9 Technical Manual, Best of Trek and Star Trek: The Magazines. The style of the history is based on histories presented in the Startrek Spaceflight Chronology by Stan Goldstein, Fred Goldstein, and Rick Sternbach and on the Star Trek A Call Of Duty ship specs pages. Please keep in mind that this is a history developed based on canon information presented in various sources and filled in with logical conjecture.

The Millenium class frigate has been called upon by the harsh new realities of the 25th century:

-Increased threath posed by alternate universe invaders like the Undine and the Mirror Universe.

-Increased time incursions by hostile forces like the Klingon and Romulan Empires as the latest incidents of a mounting trend since the Borg attempt to alter Earth's History during the mid-24th century.

-Increased incidences of alternate timelines like the one from Admiral Janeway we currently live in, the unrecorded Xindi War from the Temporal Cold War and the one created by the disappearance of Ambassador Spock and the renegade Romulan Captain Nero during the Hobus catastrophy.

- The disturbing fact that these incidents were mostly stopped or even just discovered by mere chance, and always after the damage was done... and in some instances, caused by Federation citizens and Starfleet personnel. Following all this, the necessity of providing Starfleet with an effective mean of prevention and response to such threats became paramount.New technologies allowing exploration and study of alternate dimensions and the timeline now for the first time available prompted an entire new area of exploration and scientific discovery, while a deepening and broadening definition and application of the Prime Directive into temporal concerns also called for an adequate tool to help Starfleet.

Addendum:General Order 1: The Prime Directive
As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

General Order 30
Starfleet Command recognizes the right of each ship commander to interpret the specifications of the Prime Directive as he sees fit, consistent with the conditions of other existing general orders in effect, and based upon circumstances that may arise in dealing with newly discovered sentient races.
General Order 1A: The Temporal Prime Directive

The dispositions of the Prime Directive shall henceforth apply on the entire spectrum of space-time. No Starfleet personnel may interfere with the timeline or with people and events in a way that would alter these from the already established facts in linear time. This includes knowledge and objects or entities from the future who's presence or use could alter the unfolding events of current time and change that future. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Temporal Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said timeline. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

General Order 30A
The right of each ship commander to interpret the specifications of the Prime Directive as he sees fit, consistent with the conditions of other existing general orders in effect, and based upon circumstances that may arise, will also apply regarding the Temporal Prime Directive and under the same ruling.
Starfleet regulation 157:All Starfleet officers will do their upmost to minimize their involvement in Historical events.157-A : No contact shall be made with any planet or culture during a temporal incursion that could otherwise result in an alteration of recorded historical events. This disposition includes all members of the United Federation of Planets. Contact includes but is not limited to; audio or video contact, away team operation or any direct or indirect encounter that could provoke an interruption in the normal chain of events.157-B :In any condition where contact could result, like assuming orbit of an inhabited planet or space encounter, all measures must be made to minimize the possibility of detection. All known camouflage measures are authorized, including the use of cloaking devices in time periods prior to the Treaty of Algeron (Gregorian Calendar 2311) and after its dissolution (Gregorian calendar 2409).

157-C : Any ship involved in a time displacement is on standing orders to self destruct in order to avoid historical-disruptive detection under the following or similar conditions: Loss of travel capability that could result in making accessible anachronistic data or technologies susceptible to affect the time period (known as the Narada Factor); Contact with higher lifeforms listed as Hostile by Starfleet which could result in unrestorable time alterations (known as the Q Factor); Contact with vessels and installations which could result in unrestorable time alterations (Known as the Aeon Factor).

157-D:Following the Prime Directive and the Temporal Prime Directive, no action is to be taken that will disrupt the normal developpement of any planet or culture. The following are examples of cause and effect scenarios that cannot be allowed to happen:Removing a living organism from its natural environement affecting the food chain slightly but enough to cause and evolutionary change (known as the Voth Factor); Litter and forgotten gear that could be salvaged, examined or retroengineered by a culture so as to become the basis of a scientific, technological or sociocultural revolution (known as the Iotian Factor); Starfleet insigna, ship profile or item and person denomination that could alter cultural parameters, such as becoming the basis of a philosophy or religion (Known as the Mintakan Factor).

THE MILLENIUM PROJECT
The Millenium Project was the program approved by the the Command Board of Starfleet out of several thousands of proposals from scientists, engineers and technicians all accross the Federation to provide the United Federation of Planets with an effective mean of meeting the new wonders and perils of the multiverse under such strict conditions as listed above; all this while facing opposition that would not be hampered by such ethics. Furthermore, such needs were becoming pressing as other possible time incursions exemplified by the latest Devidian Incident, the Jem'Hadar bugship mystery and the return of the 2800 showed plainly.

The class' name, Millenium, completely new and reflecting the special aim it is built for, heralds a new era of Starfleet operations that will come to fullness in the centuries to come while it safeguards our reality even in ages past. As such, it christens the most ambitious starship project yet. The new Millenium class not only represents the next stage of Starfleet operations, but also the adaptability of recent designs to new needs and needs to come, emphasizing a completely new approach while allowing for versatility and efficiency.

Since the turn of the 25th century, the galaxy is facing an increasing number of new wonders and challenges from even beyond this universe. This class is therefore developped to carry a message of peace and hope for life among the stars, as well as to show the strength of resolve to discover and learn, all the while preserving reality itself from threats to its integrity; all that which forms the very foundation of the United Federation of Planets and of Starfleet, its main tool to meet those challenges.

Initial production of the Millenium class began at the Starfleet Technology Office Integration Facility at utopia plenitia (Sol IV) with final compartmentalization at a classified shipyard installation in the Bryma System, where it continues to this day, under the direct and exclusive authority of the Office of Temporal Investigations and the support of both Starfleet Intelligence and the Federation Science Council. Starfleet plans to produce eight of those ships of the line within no longer than every five years per frame and create thus two dedicated task forces as the nucleus of the future new Temporal Starfleet.

Uniquely equiped and armed, the design philosophy for the Millenium class was shaped by the numerous threats of transdimensional species making increased incursions in our universe, especially following the fall of the Borg Collective; also by the presence of time altering cultures like the Krenim Empire, time-altering forces like the factions embroiled in the Temporal Cold War, the alarmingly increasing number of altered timelines like the original Voyager's future we are now in and the Kelvin universe, both created by the actions of wayward Federation citizens and Starfleet officers; not to mention the occasional time-displacement accident like the Manheim effect and the quantum crossover of Lieutenant Worf and cosmic-scaled perils and wonders of newly discovered phenomenons like the Azimuth Horizon Anomaly and the former Expanse of the Sphere Builders of the 22nd century. The now undeniable reality of the multiverse imposed onto the Federation the necessity to implement definite actual measures to face these new wonders and perils, which no current starship design was able to fully face. Especially, no ship born in the second half of the 24th century out of the specialized design philosophy could answer properly all those duties like the old masterpiece but overtly complicated design that had been the Galaxy class had been able to. And yet, even multipurpose designs, including the latest Odyssey and Lotus classes, could only passively wait for a catastrophy to happen and hope to find ways to correct the problem while unable to be proactive in the safeguard of the multiverse and the timeline.

The Millenium Project therefore attempted to return to the grand multi-purpose concepts of starship design and then push the concept beyond any previous limitation, through all realities and accross time itself. This demanded inevitably to push the envelope as far as possible when it came to computer power, shielding, armament, sensors, propulsion and systems capabilities, especially considering that the ship would have to be of limited size and crew to minimize risks of temporal interference and implement all the revolutionary technologies on a spaceframe. The Millenium Class vessel, the most revolutionary approach yet ever commissionned by Starfleet, combines the scientific performance associated with the Galaxy-class vessels, without the cumbersome complexity that plagued it, with the tactical power of the Sovereign Class but without its overly militaristic design, along with the exploration capabilities of the Nova Class but on a vaster scale... and finally expanding the streamlined versatility of the Intrepid Class; all those capabilties supported by the need of stealth and subtelty in order to act without disrupting the timeline or other universes.

CONSTRUCTION HISTORY

When the time came to build an actual vehicle fully capable of navigating between realities, time and space, while threats and mysteries from out of this universe and time alterations were multiplying at an alarming rate all accross the quadrant and beyond, Starfleet decided to be practical; it first looked at existing starship designs to see if one could be readily modified to receive and use all the state of the art, revolutionary technologies such a need demanded. And of all starship platforms available, two almost immediately stood out as the perfect one to do so; the twehty-second century NX class and the twenty-third century Loknar class.

The NX-01 warp ship was the first Human design to reach warp 5, use transporter technology and polarized plating, the first type of powered hull structures predating the recent deployable regenerative armor. The catamaran design proved to be a sturdy, efficient and excellent platform for new technologies in propulsion and armament. It obviously inspired as much as the legendary Constitution class the design of the most formidable design of the following century, the Loknar class of frigates.

The five series of Loknar vessels were built at the beginning of a period of Federation expansion known to historians as "The Great Awakening". Although the era was defined by scientific research and exploratory ventures, numerous small warship classes were built, including the Loknar. These vessels were primarily designed byAndorians, who favored a doctrine of border protection for the young Federation. When authorized by the Federation Appropriations Committee, the Loknars were constructed by Andorian shipbuilders in large numbers in shipyards at Mars and Salazaar, and introduced to service on reference stardate 1/9010 with the commissioning of the USS Loknar. All Loknar vessels were named for Federation colony provinces and cities, and many were crewed exclusively by Andorians, as part of the now legendary "Blue Fleet". Over the course of the Four Years War, the Loknar became a staple of fleet action, and was upgraded several times from its original design. It was the first design to ever reach warp 9 because of it's streamlined catamaran construction, a fact that didn't escape the 25th century engineers working on the Quantum Slipstream Drive and to which the design already showed an excellent configuration to implement. The first series weapon complement of heavy lasers and accelerator cannons were replaced by phasers and photon torpedoes, the standard starship weapons of the mid-23rd century era and beyond. The Loknar remained in production until the late 23rd century, with older vessels continuously refit to newer standards.

The extraordinary reliability, power and survival efficiency of the design and it's standard Starfleet design basic frame made it ideal to build as quickly as possible such a revolutionary vessel and ensure it would be suited for the most hazardous conditions imaginable... and as yet unimaginable.
The Millenium-Class starship development was originally conceived as part of Starfleet's response to the growing threats to the Federation from beyond the final frontier. The intent was trifold: expand Starfleet's exploration prospects beyond the known universe by revisiting the feasibility of quantum slipstream travel, provide an in-the-field modular testbed for new technologies applicable to a 25th century "spearhead" for the Federation even accross time and space, and ensure an effective stealth scout vessel with enough firepower and ressources to last for extended periods of time in far away regions without support, in space, in time and other universes as well.

Inspired by the earlier catamaran designs and up to the highly successful Akira class, Starfleet Corps of Engineers (SCE) has been working on a special new class of starship for some time, designed for high-level scouting and behind the lines situations that no current starship classes could effectively accomplish. The project was classified by Starfleet Intelligence due to the growing unease of the Federation Council and several member worlds with the latest overly-militaristic tendencies of Starfleet. The project was so secret that access to the Utopia Planitia shipyard was restricted for months while the project was completed. Now, Starfleet Command decided to offer the ships in limited numbers and only to its most experienced captains.
The millenium's basic hullform is both essentially similar to the classic profile of Starfleet Loknar frigates; the familiar combination of a saucer-shaped primary hull with outboard warp nacelles attached by slender pylons directly to the aft of the saucer. However the forms of the hull, nacelles and pylons are designed to minimize the ship's visibility to enemy sensors and even the naked eye. The saucer and nacelle shapes are flattened, with thin edges and tapered angles. Like the NX-01, there is but a nominal secondary hull and twin-hulled as for the Loknar under the primary saucer, housing two main deflectors along the ventral surface of the saucer. Two double-warp nacelles attach at close angles to wide pylons at the rear of the secondary hull. Weapon hardpoints are blended into the hull surface, and translucent panels on the surface of the saucer show instruments to coordinate the data relayed from the active sensor probes, which launch from a small bay located in the secondary hull.

The ship's hull material is dark grey, with no visible windows, rendering the ship difficult to see against the background of space, if not for thin, blue running light strips and a few small windows, which are mainly located along the secondary hull. No registry or designated identification is painted on the hull, to further protect the timeline from any polluting data.

The experimental USS Millenium completed construction in 2409, and prepped for next-generation bio-gel computer core packs, powerful phaser pulse cannons, and a new attempt at QSD technology. However, the project was put on indefinite hiatus at the outbreak of the Borg War. With the conclusion of hostilities, Project Millenium started up again with a renewed vigor. The intent was to have eight Millenium-Class starships completed by 2410 for assistance in expanding the Federation's reach, defense and understanding of History and the multiiverse. The design needed therefore to be that of a medium-sized ship with extraordinary low sensor signature capable of matching the versatility of a scout vessel while providing the full scientific capabilities of a dedicated research vessel and the firepower of a heavy cruiser. And all this capable of travelling through time and quantum realities and back again.A tall order indeed.

The return of the USS Voyager in 2377 had provided new technological applications amongst the other leaps in advance that occurred during The Dominion War, among them the very ultraperforming stardrive the Federation had been looking for since the days of the original ''Great Experiment'' of the Excelsior class, back in the 23rd century: the quantum slipstream drive. With the rush to advance the Federation's technologies and prepare Starfleet for a post-War Alpha Quadrant, the Millenium-Class was selected to have a variety of new untested technologies implemented like this new approach to faster than light travel that could also turn it into a transdimensional timeship.

In 2409, construction commenced at Utopia Planitia, with the intent of the vessel to handle the newest version of the slipstream drive out of Starfleet R & D upon completion in 2410. Construction of the starship was completed well before time, in complete secrecy, at Utopia Plenitia. The vessel's construction and testing was given to the authority of Admiral Neil S. Redding of both Lotus Fleet and Starfleet Intelligence, who came onboard the construction project in 2410 right after the Borg War. Barely a few months later, the newly-christened Millenium began early tests of its new MKII quantum slipstream drive, which could sustain slipstream for a much longer time than its predecessors and with a significantly reduced cooldown period. During one such test, a quantum-flux error struck the drive, resulting in the ship being "pushed out of phase" in the quantum tunnel. The engineering crew onboard managed to safely remove the vessel from the quantum stream, but in the process, Admiral Redding mysteriously vanished. The Admiral was declared MIA after a month of intense searching and study of the Millenium. He was thoerized to be in quantum flux but then, he was brought back unexpectedly during initial testing of the chronodrive; just as inexplicably, he was brought back in two versions; his current older self and one several decades younger and with a significant memory loss. While he is but just now about to be returned to active duty with the rank of Commander, to this day, it is unknown what exactly occurred during the quantum flux incident.

The Millenium was originally built by Starfleet Research & Development, Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and Casimir Quantum-Nautics. When the incoming temporal shockwave from the 23rd century was detected, Starfleet tried to launch the cursed class through the cold start method but it failed to maintain a stable timewarp and Starfleet officially decommissioned it. With the implementation of the next capital ship class of the Odyssey project, the Millenium project, although very successful as a standard starship and proven as intended with still much promises ahead of it, was nevertheless ended without much of an explanation while Starfleet Intelligence took charge of the investigation regarding the accident involving Admiral Redding. Just like the Ambassador class, it fell before its time, victim of its own success as the very advanced technologies it had helped develop and test were now used into the new 25th century capital ships classes like the refitted Vesta and Avenger classes.

However, the whole official story was in fact a cover-up to deliver the pristine ship to the secret Millenium Project of the Office of Temporal Investigations. The Millenium class starship was already defined as the testing ship for a number of newly created or found Starfleet technologies that needed to be classified; weapons, shields, slipstream drive, and a number of other top secret experimental systems. It was therefore the natural choice for the Office of Temporal Investigations, supported by Starfleet Intelligence, as to the type of starship that could be used for its purpose. The Millenium did not participate in the War of a Thousand Cubes. But during the chaos of the final battle with the Collective, the prototype was covertly transfered with ease to a secret shipyard in the old demilitarized zone between the federation and Cardassian space. Right after its accident, as it was in truth rushed to a secret asteroid base of the Bryma system for extensive modifications: The Ambassador class USS Artemis, the legendary "Stalwart Guardian of the Federation"was found hidden and forgotten in this very secret shipyard. The Millenium, was in turn hidden there, thanks to its unusually sleek and compact shape design yet similar to the classic Starfleet cruiser design allowing it to fit in there, under the authority of Starfleet Intelligence by the Office of Temporal Investigation, to implement the very first prototype of a timeship and transdimensional starship.

The feasability of such a vessel had been duly recorded by the logs of the starship Voyager. Federation technology however, was unable to fully retroengineer what had been gleaned from glimpses of 29th century technologies out of encounters with the Starfleet from half a millenia in the future. There was also strong argument made about the fact that using those technologies would not only violate the dictates of the Temporal Prime Directive, but possibly bring the Future Starfleet down on them to correct the alteration. Starfleet therefore had no choice but to try to come up with a viable temporal vehicle based solely on current known technologies and concepts.

Registered NX-88, it began its conversion phase in 2410 with its hull provisioned and hastily prepared for deep space trials barely a few months later when the temporal Kelvin Shockwave was detected. New computer designs, weapon concepts and defensive resources were implemented and even the MKII QSD drive made fully operational. But they were still far from having a starship reliably and safely able to fly through alternate dimensions or through time. Fortunately, Lotus Fleet USS Spectre, crewed by an elite group of officers, managed to use the slingshot computation to go back and correct the time alteration and save reality. But it had been way to close for comfort and the need for a ship truly capable of intervening in such circumstances became crucial in the eyes of the Federation Council. The incident however, showed the way to efficiently implement that project; a reduced expert crew on a medium-sized ship with state of the art equipement.

The first obstacle was the power source itself; matter-antimatter reaction certainly was powerful enough and could be used with the Scott Cold Start Formula to generate timewarp; but this was highly risky and required constant and extensive modifications, monitoring and maintenance of the drive as the matter-antimatter reaction had to be pushed into near cascade failure, without safety pre-heating and control, to even generate the process... and still risk burning out the entire propulsion system of the ship even when it worked. The answer therefore came from a radical new approach based on the discovered side effect of the microsingularity drive, used by the Romulan Star Empire instead of the matter-antimatter reaction of almost every other spacefaring species. In faster than light technologies, the Romulans lagged almost a century behind other neighboring civilizations until they developped in the 24th century a power system harnessing the gravitational energies of an artificially created microsingularity. Although slightly less performant and definitely less adaptable than standard antimatter technology, it nevertheless worked flawlessly, with one very unique side-effect of particular interest for the Millenium project: instead of producing trilithium as a waste byproduct, that specific type of stardrive produced chronitons, or "four-dimensional particles".One junior engineer, Lieutenant Junior Grade Robert Baoule of the original, refited starship Artemis, proposed in a (rapidly classified) paper the harnessing of such byproduct temporal particles into a quantum tunnel produced by a QSD drive. By applying any specific quantum frequency signature to the drive bombarded with said particles, such a power source could, in theory, generate at will a controled timewarp or any other transdimensional warp effect when adjusted to specific quantum frequencies. Computer simulations, laboratory tests and small scale experiments conducted by Temporal Investigations and safeguarded by Starfleet Intelligence proved him right. And in barely two months, the first functional chronodrive was installed on the USS Millenium for trial runs. That is when the very first test resulted in the recovery of lost Admiral Redding, albeit in a permanently altered double state.

There was however a second problem. The unprecedented computing power required by travel through both time and space or to other dimensions; no computer design was able to achieve such computation flawlessly, be it from a positronic brain or neurogel pack technology. But one genius scientist had managed near the end of the Dominion war to combine both into reproducing literally the first true bionic brain for the then newly implemented Achilles class of heavy siege destroyers. The discarded THETIS system (Test Human-Emulating Technical Intelligence and Sentience) following the Achilles AI going rogue, provided the last missing piece for the Millenium project.

There is currently one Millenium-class starship in service, with only seven more planned for production. At present however, no other Millenium-class vessels are to be made until the current prototype sufficiently demonstrate the validity of the design in operational situations.

CHRONODRIVE (TIMEWARP/TRANSDIMENSIONAL PROPULSION SYSTEM)

The laws of Relativity, proposed by Albert Einstein of Earth and T’Var of Vulcan, state that you cannot travel faster than light because time slows down as you approach the speed of light due to the time dilation effect and therefore the speed of light is a limiting factor. However as early experimentation in FTL travel prior to warp drive showed, if you were able to travel faster than 300,000 km/s within Einsteinian space, then you would encounter the time distortion effect, resulting in you arriving at your destination before you leave your starting point. This is the basis for timewarp drive.

In reality, time warp does NOT propel a ship beyond the speed of light. While travelling at light speed, it takes years to reach another star system, but only days pass on the ship due to the time dilation effect. But the timewarp drive augments the time distortions generated by light speed to partially reverse the passage of time during the voyage. This allows the ship to arrive at its destination as though the same amount of time has passed in the universe as it did on the ship. For example, a ship travelling at light speed, where one day passes in the universe, one minute passes on the ship. The augmented time distortions causes the ship to go back in time so that only one minute has passed in the universe while still completing one day worth of travel. This effect happens every millisecond of time warp flight, giving the illusion of faster than light travel.

There have been theories that if the time distortions were augmented enough, then it would be possible for the ship to arrive at its destination before it left its starting point, giving it the ability to travel into the past: Time travel. However in order to travel beyond yesterday, it would require the energy of an exploding star. And to go beyond the one minute mark, from the previous example, would still take incredible amounts of power beyond a mere starship's capabilities.

Achieving light speed is the key for timewarp drive. To achieve light speed, the first experiment in time warp drive used a device simply known as the Z-machine. The Z-machine generated a massive subspace field that dimensionally accelerates the ship to light speed. This is preferred because even antimatter powered rockets takes significant amounts of time to reach light speed and requires incredible amounts of fuel. Just to reach ½ light speed, the ship would require twice its mass worth of matter and antimatter fuel. And even more so to reach light speed and to decelerate. And to decelerate from light speed, the Z-machine is simply deactivated or reduced in power. The ship uses a series of heavy graviton induction coils to generate the "time stabilization field," the field used to amplify the time distortion effect to allow time warp to take place. The time stabilization effect was discovered by accident. A science probe was designed to examine the laws of relativity, and able to travel at light speed without any real faster than light drive. This probe entered a heavy graviton field that for a split second allowed the probe to accelerate to warp 2.15, roughly 10 times the speed of light.

The Z-machine and the time warp stabilization field coils, both within the nacelles, are linked in series, so if one fails, the other will also fail. This "fail safe" is to prevent any real possibilities of the ship being trapped at light speed, frozen in time for years.

When the project began in 2251, the only ship to date to use time warp drive was the Constitution class U.S.S. Enterprise, commanded by Captain Christopher Pike, where as other Constitution class starships used the conventional subspace displacement field warp drive. As of 2260, despite being more fuel efficient than space warp, the timewarp drive program was shut down and the Enterprise was refitted with conventional space warp engines with no explanation given.

Conspiracy theories have ranged from the ship actually being able to travel through time as easily through space, to the Enterprise travelling thousands of years into the future when the time stabilization field had failed and mysteriously returned. What ever the reason, the same conspiracy theorists also believe the technology was perfected for the NX-2000, under the false designation of "transwarp drive" to allow the ship to arrive at its destination at the same time it left its starting point. Infinite velocity, even though the crew would still age at the same rate as they would if they were travelling at conventional warp speeds. The failure of the ''great experiment'' again classified the timeship concept as impractical and was shelved.

Between the original Enterprise and the Great Experiment, the same USS Enterpise, now under the command of captain James T. Kirk and using a conventional warp drive, went throught no less than two different time travel incidents that gave further insight into time travel. One was an accidental acceleration beyond warp speed through the close circumventing of a singularity, creating a "slingshot effect" that propelled the ship into an uncontrolable timewarp. This method thus required a very exact flight path accross a massive object like a star or a black hole in order to use its gravitational pull to slingshot the vessel away and beyond the time barrier. But here the problem was twofold: first and foremost, any specific target-time required a computation power beyond anything currently available. Preliminary tests showed a precision within plus or minus half a Millenium at best, clearly impractical for any pinpoint action demanded from a vessel tasked to protect the timeline and oppose identified threats or implement specific studies. A recent, revolutionary breakthrough evolved from the new bioneural technology provided a possible avenue of solution to that problem... but then there was the second obstacle to consider.

Regardless of computing power, a neutronium-like sturdiness of the spaceframe was required of any practical, regular use of the slingshot effect, so that it could whistand repeatedly the immense forces it used to achieve timewarp; again, a technology simply available only on paper, despite the reality of such construction possibility having been encountered on the famous doomsday machine planet-killer space robot. Although theoretically feasible, time travel through the slingshot effect also proved impractical even with the late 24th century cutting edge technology the Millenium class was already blessed with. A few tests of the method proved that, at best, it could be done a couple of times before major repair and refit of the entire ship would be necessary, making the whole deployement too costly and ineffective to be considered, even if reliable and precise enough computation could be achieved.

The other incident occured when a warp core cold start was attempted to prevent the ship from crashing through the gravity well of a collapsing planet; the attempt was successful but it propelled the ship into timewarp, this time controlable just as normal warp travel could be through navigational controls.

This discovery prompted experimentation in time travel once more and a working prototype of a time travelling starship was built out of the basic frame of the Andorian-designed Loknar class type of starship. This prototype, the USS Lynx, achieved what was dubbed "retrograde time travel" through the precise application of the Cold Start Scott Formula on the warp engine. Timewarp occured at a constant velocity of warp 1.5 and could be maintained indefinitely. The main problem however was that not only overheating of the warp core required enormous dissipators and massive intercoolers 300% more efficient than standard systems, able to flawlessly work within the first .08 seconds of warp core start, but the simple act of bringing the core to the brink of a breach and maintaining it there was too dangerous for practical situations, like combat or emergency disengagement from any hazard threatening the ship. The use of the warp core in such a manner also caused severe wear and tear on it, forcing the addition of a smaller secondary warp drive for conventional travel which further decreased the exploration and tactical effectiveness of a ship expected to face unknown perils and challenges. Worse, the slightest malfunction in those cooling systems could result in this core to breach, making the concept ultimately impractical and dangerous for a vessel tasked in confronting dangers accross the timeline. With all the advancements in warp drives since then, this problem still remained under the unchangeable laws of physics. On top of it all, this time travel could only be done towards the past; it did not provide any possibility to travel towards the future, a final limitation that finished the project before it was actually put to active use.

The accidental occurences of time travel and other incidents of History-altering events like the Devidian incursions on 19th century Earth along with those experiments and accidents like that of Doctor Manheim in artificial temporal loop effects, prompted the creation of the Office of Temporal Investigations by the the 24th century to monitor and regulate all time-related data and occurences.

One benefit from all this however was the stimulus given to the developpement of more efficient warp power for starships during the late 23rd and throughout the 24th century. Venerable Earth company General Electric was commissioned to create a high-efficiency, ultra-high output warp core. GE had produced warp cores for such workhorse vessels as the SydneyOberth and Antares classes whose warp cores were known for their reliability, low maintenance requirements and ease of repairs; and their crowning achievement was the class 8 warp core of the later Sovereign Class starship and afterwards the class 9 for the Odyssey and Lotus classes. While the overpowerful power core had proven problematic when first implemented on the Sovereign prototype, the different, slightly larger frame and more advanced systems of the following Chimera class and those that came afterwards paved the way to a revival of the timewarp project, now classified by the Office of Temporal Investigations as the Millenium project.

But, despite all its latest advancements, matter-antimatter technology, although powerful enough, still needed too much alterations and modifications to even attempt creating a stable timewarp, leaving too many uncontrolable variables and requiring such extensive monitoring and maintenance with still such a high risk level that the implementation of an actual working time travelling vehicle was at least many decades ahead... if not more.

Then, it took another accidental incident and some out-of-the-box thinking to solve this problem and stumble upon the solution and even open unsuspected applications beyond even fabled time travel, with the advent of the first Federation-made microsingularity power core and quantum slipstream travel.

MAIN ENGINEERING

Located on Deck 8, Main Engineering is the ‘heart’ of the ship, if considering the bridge as the ‘brain’. It has access to almost all systems aboard the starship, and manages repairs, power flow, and general maintenance. Thanks to upgrades in computer technology, the staff needed to monitor and upkeep the major systems of a Millenium-class starship are proportionately smaller than other vessels of its size. In fact, ten percent of its complement are enough to make it fully operational; and the main computer's artificial intelligence can also manage the entire ship all by itself if circumstances calls for it, including basic maintenance from automated (non-sentient) exocomp multitask modules.

Entrance to the primary engineering spaces is provided by two large blast doors, a pair each deck on decks 7 and 8, that can be closed for internal or external security reasons, as well as in case of emergencies.

Just inside of the doors on deck 8 - Main Engineering - is an observation area where technicians monitor various systems of the ship. Also in that area, is a floor-mounted situational display similar to the Master Systems Display found on the Bridge. Replacing the old-style "pool table" with hand-manipulated holographic views and controls, the Chief Engineer can use the display to more easily get a broad view of the situation with just a glance and then look more closely into specific areas and systems at will.

Directly behind the MSD is the warp core and main control systems. Circular in shape, the room is an outgrowth of the Galaxy class design, but exceedingly functional to save space inside the ship; the exceptionally compact design of the innovative singularity core and QSD drive provided even more space so that the engine room of the Millenium class is exceptionally roomy. Usable consoles are mounted on every piece of ‘real estate’ around the circumference of the room and provide primary control access for the engineers and technicians. Additionally, there are numerous ladders and access panels to jefferies tubes, leading throughout the starship – the Millenium class being the first series of starship to take full advantage of these access spaces for more than extraordinary maintenance. The technical complexity of the starship dictates the use of these spaces to maintain peak efficiency and effect proper repairs.

Off to the starboard side of Main Engineering is the Chief Engineer’s Office, which is equiped with a diagnostics table, assembly and repair equipment, a small replicator, and a personal use console with built-in private viewscreen.

In the center of Main Engineering are superposed the Quantum Slipstream Matrix and the Micro Singularity Chamber as a two-in-one assembly unit. This is where primary power for the ship is generated inside the chamber and either sent directly to the warp nacelles for standard propulsion of through the QSD matrix for either slipstream travel or time/transdimensional travel. This system is checked on a regular basis due to its importance to the ship. Access to the whole power core is highly restricted, with a front port to get to the benamyte recrystalisation matrix as well as an over side port for access to the warp plasma conduits. Same with the cloaking system and holographic camouflage system which are direclty connecte to the main power assembly but also to the other power sources of the ship in case main power fails.

A second tier rings the second level of Main Engineering on deck 7. Two ladders on the opposite ends of the catwalk provide access. Controls for the various Fusion Power Plants, along with the Impulse Engines, are monitored from this deck. Damage Control Teams are mustered here, as well as internal ship maintenance teams. Numerous consoles and replicators line this section, serving as auxiliary consoles for Main Engineering, along with providing engineering research space and secondary computer core support.

Access to the jefferies Tubes is provided in various places on both the first and second tier Engineering spaces.

The overall design is very reminiscent of the USS Dauntless encountered by the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. In this main engineering complex, thanks to continuing advances in Engineering development and automation capability coupled with the THETIS system, the number of technicans on-duty in Engineering has been reduced from thirty to only ten on normal cruise mode; however, when the ship is placed on alert, the number of technicans in Engineering increases to twenty during condition yellow with additional personnel on standby and fully back to thirty with additional damage control specialists, medics, and security officers as needed. Still, it is far less than what would normally be needed for such a large vessel.

Engineering is serviced by an number of terminals and free-standing consoles throughout all engineering levels, and the Master Situation Display located directly in front of the warp core, which is normally overseen by the ship's Engineering Chief during his or her duty shift. All consoles are holographic controled or console controled at one's preferences and are accessible only through the same safety protocols as the bridge. Access to main engineering itself is restricted to authorized personnel at established shifts of work and doors will not open to anyone else. Access to the singularity drive (Ensign & above), the QSD (lieutenant & above) and the temporal controls (Chief engineer and command grade officers only) are even more restricted and under security access protocols.

PROPULSION SYSTEMS

The new propulsion systems of the Millenium class are a key factor that help make this prototype the most advanced starship in the fleet: the first Federation-made microsingularity-powered warp drive matching the best MARA assembly currently in use, with 2 double-nacelles benefiting from the exceptional efficiency first tested on the Ambassador class and later the Galaxy class; a new impulse drive efficient in dense or highly irradiated conditions with 4 multifiring engines developped by Lotus Fleet engineer Marksus Sangliar that allows exceptional maneuverability at sublight speed and match vessels smaller than her class size; a prototype Mark-II Quantum Slipstream drive that was developed by pioneers in the Quantum Slipstream technology and former U.S.S. Voyager crew members Lieutenant Commander B'Elanna Torres and science specialist Annika Hansen. The revolutionary micro-singularity power core developped by Lieutenant Robert Baoule of the USS Artemis provides the chroniton emissions also necessary for the transdimensional capabilities of the ship; by combining these with the quantum slipstream effect, a controlled timewarp or quantum resonnance effect are achieved. It is the combining of the singualrity powered warp drive and QSD drive that created this, the first functional temporal and transdimensional engine.

WARP PROPULSION SYSTEM : SINGULARITY POWER CORE

In mid 2410, one of Lotus Fleet's starships, the aforementionned USS Artemis of the Ambassador class, was involved in a time displacement incident (Operation Sysiphus:classified) that provided the missing keys for the timeship project to become a reality.

Several time travel effects and experimentations had been thoroughly recorded, studied and tested during this incident by the Artemis, a ship and crew especially well suited for such extensive scientific research; and her officers and crew proved exemplary in their application of the Temporal Prime Directive... even as it had not been formulated officially yet. A few of her officers even cumulated an inordinate amount of experience with time displacement from exposition to the Azimuth Horizon anomaly and interference by the Q entity. Their last mission to stop Romulan interference with History also provided invaluable data that allowed the OTI engineers to rethink from scratch the time engine and look into dramatically different technologies than those usually known in the Federation. The data, tests and implementations they came back with went further than any previously recorded and tried, providing to the Office all the missing pieces for its timeship project... and more.

The Bombardier engineering company went back to the drawing boards on their Class 2 Quantum Core. Noting the severe loss of power thanks to the system power requirements of the upcoming Odyssey class, Bombardier Propulsion Laboratories designed an entirely new chamber for the Millenium class. Instead of being based on existing matter-antimatter warp core designs, BPL scrapped the classic design and built one from the ground up based instead on micro-singularity power source. Assigning two teams to develop the core, BPL hoped that friendly competition between the two teams would produce a totally new design than previously conceived, as called for by the unique requirements of the Millenium project. Their design teams did not disapoint; design team 2, dubbed the Cygnus Core team from the first black hole discovered by Earth scientists in late 20th century, finished their project first and initial testing and simulations were extremely promising. Designed to be used exclusively with Bio-Neural Gel Pack based computers, their new design relied on the speed and computing power of these new systems to maintain maximum operational efficiency. After over a year of design and preproduction, the new and revolutionary singularity power core - named the Class S1 - was delivered to the secret Byrma asteroid shipyard for final integration. The Type S1 would go on to see deployment in the Millenium Project.

Although the theory had been known for centuries, only the Romulan Star Empire had used it to come up with their own type of power core for warp travel, reaching faster-than-light sppeds much later than other spacefaring civilizations but closing the gap by the 24th century with ships comparatively larger and more powerful than its neighbors. A quantum singularity is usually a naturally occurring phenomenon. Also called a black hole, a quantum singularity is usually a result of a collapsed large star, such as a red supergiant. The quantum singularity emits a large amount of gravitons, rendering escape from the deep event horizon impossible at or below c. Space around the singularity is folded so that imaginary gravity lines follow the equation f(r)=1/r (a two-quadrant cutaway diagram of the black hole would have f(r)=-|1/r|) up to a point.

There is no evidence of what is actually inside a black hole, only that most black holes have "donut singularities." These singularities are ring-shaped and it is possible that they might connect to another black hole, forming a bridge between two places, two time frames, two universes, or a combination of the three. When the two join, one of them has to become a white hole (the exact opposite of a black hole). Using an analogy, instead of being "the universe’s vacuum cleaner," it would be like a blow dryer. A white hole expels everything and nothing can get in, only get out. When a black hole and another black hole or a white hole connect, they form a wormhole, although it is only one way, toward the infinite center of the joined black holes (and utter oblivion) or the direction of the white hole. The "wall" of the bridge, however, is too narrow for an object bigger than 10 atomic masses (that is including molecules and atoms). So, if there is some kind of an antigravity field (it is probably an antigraviton particle emitter), that would keep the bridge from disconnecting and would keep it wide enough for a vessel to get through. A wormhole, unlike a black hole-to-white hole bridge, serves as a two-way gateway to a different time, place, or universe. A wormhole can be destabilized with antiverterons and antitachyon pulses.

There are three ways to get to a destination (from point A to point B). The "usual" way, in which line AB is distance d. The way of the "worm," in which line AB is distance d-x (where x is the length of the wormhole and d-x<d). And there is also the "0" way, where space is bent so that the two points, A and B merge to form a new point, C, in which line AB has a distance of zero. Warp propulsion takes the third road but requires massive amounts of power. Matter-antimatter reaction is one available source of such power. The artificial creation of a micro-singularity and harnessing its graviton forces is another.

The application of singularity powered propulsion is one of the first FTL (Faster Than Light) propulsion that a typical civilization would normally attempt, since this theory usually is the first that a civilization comes up with (think of Stephen Hawking on Earth). The attempt would usually fail, as the civilization does not have the technology to detect very small, to them yet unthinkable particles. That civilization also thinks that a matter-antimatter meeting can tear up the fabric of space, so that controlling this effect could produce a warping field allowing faster than light travel. On Earth, this was the breakthrough achieved by Zephrom Cochrane that led to the conventional warp drive. Other more agressive civilizations like the Klingons also discovered it sooner because of extensive military research and application of antimatter. The Romulan Empire is the sole exception known, presumably because their very ressource-poor systems prompted more research into the more obvious singularity power theory.

In order to commence the singularity propulsion, a ship needs to be in outer space, preferably outside a solar system, in case of an accident. One would also need a graviton, tachyon, verteron, and chroniton generator and their appropriate counterparts to shut the rift down. First, one needs to launch a graviton generator outside of the ship, about 1000km away. Once the generator starts up, one would need to monitor the gravitons carefully, as the emissions tend to increase over time. Once the generator emits a graviton field of 100S (1S = 1 solar mass = Sol), a short burst of antigravitons would make the emissions slow down significantly. A moment later one would need to emit tachyons and verterons simultaneously. Together, tachyons and verterons would open a stable rift. They will connect the point of destination to the point of origin, so that the distance between them is 0. If only verterons are used, the rift will evaporate, since the rift itself would emit verterons. If only tachyons are used, the rift will be stable, but only for a short while. In addition, the generator would burn out. Chronitons therefore would tie the point of destination’s time to the point of origin’s. Chronitons alone would not be used as the travelers would then end up at a some random time in our universe as all particles have to be of a certain frequency since each sector and time in the universe has a different signature at the quantum level.

This was the key that allowed the rapid and effective developpement of the chronodrive, once this was all observed and understood in relation with the quantum slipstream effect.

Some species do have this technology, such as the Q and the Bajoran wormhole Prophets. As one gets closer to a singularity, one can obtain god-like powers because that one can exist everywhere, in every universe, time and place, since the 4 dimensions are useless on (or in) the singularity, one can assume that these "godly" beings actually live in the wormhole. They might have lived there their whole lives (they were implanted there) or a ship might have been caught and somehow there were survivors for whom linear time has no meaning. Some species are experienced with linear time enough to understand it, such as Q. Admiral Janeway attempted and succeeded in opening a "0" rift linking year 2404 in the Alpha Quadrant to the year 2378 in the Delta Quadrant. The rift was created by using only tachyons and chronitons, so her device burned out.

One junior engineer, Lieutenant Robert Baoule of Lotus Fleet, a propulsion expert and long time advocate of the Romulan-type system over the conventional one, published a theoretical research paper into applying the singulatiy ouput to the quantum slipstream effect and produce an effective transdimensional and time travel capable starship drive. While Federation warp cores produce trilithium as a waste product, singularity power sources like what the Romulans were using produce chronitons instead. He thus theorized that, by channeling these chronitons through the quantum matrix and regulating their frequency, controlled transdimensional movement could be achieved the same way travel through space via the quantum tunnel could. the only drawback was the as yet unavailable computing power to do so and a sturdy enough spaceframe to support the stress of such travels.

The Office of Temporal Investigations however studied the paper and knew that this young officer had come up with exactly what they had been looking for all these years... and they had not only the resources and the authority, but the actual spaceframe to make it all a reality. They already had with the Millenium class USS Millenium the spaceframe and testbed needed to implement the technology. With the eighty years-old Artemis destroyed during Operation Horizon, the OTI now found itself with another stroke of luck: able to timely recruit the most timetravel-experienced, knowledgeable and reliable officers and crew in Starfleet for their timeship prototype, the USS Millenium.

In barely 2 years, they came up with the first chronodrive, using the quantum-funneling principles of the MKII QSD drive of the Millenium class with a Romulan-type singularity-powered warp core. The power core's natural chroniton emissions could be harnessed into the QSD matrix to generate a controlable timewarp effect. This trend of unorthodox research and application then extended to all aspects of the ship's refit, from the positronic framed gel-pack computer core to the breen-type dissipating weapons array and chroniton warheads, as its new function required nothing less if it was to be a successful spearhead of the new Starfleet accross time and other dimensions and the exemplary upholder of the Temporal Prime Directive.

By this time, however, Starfleet issued an order for two Millenium class starships to be produced, one as the testbed and the other as the first actually deployed transdimensional starship. The USS Genesis was therefore designated to serve as a design reference and testbed for these new systems, while the last of the class. The USS Millenium itself would be the deployed ship. Construction of these vessels had begun in 2408 and with these innovative developpement, completion of the first working models was done in mid 2410. With the successful testing and deployment of Ablative Hull components aboard the Defiant Class in 2370, and of regenerative ablative armor on the USS Lotus in 2408, Starfleet Command requested the addition of these protective elements to the Millenium Class hull. These added layers of protection would secure the Millenium class as the first line of defense against the Undine, the Mirror Universe any further incursions from other realities or time periods, while providing exploration beyond the final frontier.

Still in actual testing phase, the micro-singularity drive installed on the prototype, first of its kind in Federation technology, was chosen over the standard matter-antimatter power source because it produces high levels of chronitons as a byproduct; which are then channeled and used for the temporal and transdimensional system. Federation centuries-old experience with antimatter however provided safeties and sealing systems and protocols nullifying all possibilities of radiation poisonning from chronitons plaguing high-powered Romulan ships. Performance from the standard Millenium class are not improved however, despite the much more compact power source and the removal of any need for antimatter and deuterium storage tanks, as the very mass of the singularity actually slightly add to the initial mass of the class, slowing it down by 1/100th at emergency speed.

The Millenium in its hull, space-frame, and drive system rates a maximum sustainable speed of Warp 9.9. While the new revolutionary S1 class warp core provide more than enough power to maintain the vessel, and being extremely reliable and - compared to other vessels of its size - low maintenance, the core still lacks high-end power to maintain any higher velocity for more than 12 hours before wear and tear starts to threaten the integrity of the whole assembly as in conventional matter-antimatter power core. and the added mass of the micro-singularity, despite its comparatively reduced size, slightly slow the ship even further at this high end; but the QSD capability allows for faster travel still, even if it is in short bursts. Engineers believed this to be a result of the tremendous power requirements of the Millenium class.

Designed specifically for the Millenium-class starship, the Bombardier Class S1 Singularity drive and power system was a first for Starfleet. Compared to other starships of similar size and mass, the Class S1 would at first appear to be quite over-powered and small for the Millenium spaceframe, but this is not so. Originally equiped with a more standard Class 9, the inability of the reactor to produce sufficient power was perhaps the primary reason for the initial failing of the prototype Millenium during trail runs and emergency launch during Operation Kelvin to correct the timeline. High-power devices, such as the enhanced deflector system, sensor pallets, Type-XII phaser arrays and Regenerative Shielding but especially the requirements of transdimensional travel, prompted such level of power output just to have a functional starship.

A breakthrough design, the singularity power core equates the most powerful starship-grade matter-antimatter reactor output to date. But while the conventional matter/antimatter reactor assembly spans 14 decks with the dilithium chamber and plasma transfer conduits located on the second level of main engineering, the singularity power core needs barely two decks for the whole power system, including controls and the QSD system and cloaking/camouflage system added to it.

Because a singularity drive does not use any of the reactants of the standard power core used by all spacefaring cultures except the Romulans, the warp coils are able to use the warp plasma to generate a more energy-efficient subspace field with less particle waste products and stresses that were found in older conventional propulsion systems to damage subspace. Starfleet' so-called "Warp Speed Limit" of Warp 5, established in 2370 after the discovery of pollution by Dr. Serova in the Hekaras Corridor, was irrelevant for this propulsion system as it performed as well as the new improved ones now in service on all Federation vessels after 2380. This also allowed to benefit from the elongated and flattened design standard that had been the trend for the last half a century, as it further allowed an easier build-up of a less damaging warp field. This allowed for an unprecendeted stealth capacity as the Millenium thus equipped leaves almost no warp signature or trace behind; comparable to that of a mere shuttlecraft, and which can be easily disguised as any type of craft trace with adjustment to the frequency of the drive. This would prove most useful for interacting within the timeline without leaving traces.

IMPULSE PROPULSION SYSTEM

During the design refit of the 2340's, Starfleet began drafting a new type of sub-light propulsion which would let them break the 0.25c limit, then classified as Full Impulse. Above this speed, the effects of Einstein's Theory of Relativity began having drastic effects on the ship and it's surrounding environment. Even at Full Impulse, ships would have to routinely have update their chronometers based on the standard time of Starfleet Command.

As has been known for centuries, the Theory of Relativity doesn't apply to subspace. It was suggested that a subspace field could be erected around a vessel as it performs speeds above 0.25c. Early designs required the warp nacelles to be charged and running, creating a static warp shell. This method was deemed to be inefficient as it required 200% more power to maintain the warp shell while the impulse engines pushed to achieve close to light speeds. The project was set on the back burner while Starfleet made more achievable improvements.

After the War of a Thousand Cubes, the Hyper-Impulse project was re-examined to determine if the goal of breaking the 0.25c barrier was possible in an efficient manner. Following the experience of the Borg War where the propensity of the Borg to engage targets at sublight speeds had called for high maneuverability even in larger ships of the line and the current trend of emphasizing mass and firepower of Klingons, Romulans and others in their ship designs, more or less following the Borg outlook, upcoming Starfleet designs called again upon the propulsion firm known as Terminal Velocity to design the next generation of Impulse Engine system as they so successfully did with the Sovereign class. The requirements were just as steep as then - a set of impulse engines that could effectively propel the vessel at maximum impulse maneuverability with a 50% loss of propulsion; this time beyond the time-dilation barrier. Several designs, including doubling up the number of impulse plants from stock designs - such as those produced by HighMPact Propulsion - resulted in reduced maneuverability and, worse than that, decreased power for systems that drew upon the Impulse engine's fusion plants for power. Terminal Velocity had also built several impulse power plants for Starfleet, including those used aboard the Constellation Class, Freedom Class, and based on the success of the Sovereign class, was used by Project Prometheus.

An elite team of technical tacticians, lead by Engineering Commodore Gregory Logan, worked with engineers to develop the Aegis Hyper-Impulse Engine. The team equiped these engines to the newest classes for testing, but its adaptability makes it suitable for any type of craft, including shuttles. The Aegis Hyper-Impulse Engines provide a variety of improvement to the basic Impulse Engines in terms of speed, maneuverability and efficiency. The Impulse Engines would be rated ‘excessive’, providing thrust far in excess of the highest estimated needs, but, so great is the thrust provided by each individual engine that a ship equiped with those has 0% loss of performance with the loss or destruction of one of her Impulse engines. Like other ships before the advent of this new system, every vessel utilizes space-time driver coils within its impulse engines to create a non-propulsive symmetrical subspace field that effectively lowers the ship's mass, making it capable of pushing the entire spacecraft using less fuel. These new impulse engines operate at 25% rating for standard operations, but can boost their output to 50% for combat operations.

The Hyper-Impulse Engine called for a large modification to the actual engine itself; the addition of a subspace field generator that would run independant of the warp nacelles. This provided several advantages over the old design, the most notable being that if the nacelles were rendered inoperable, high impulse speeds could still be reached. Also, the subspace field generators would consume considerably less power as they didn't require to be engineered to meet the stresses of faster-than-light speeds. A slight downfall to the system is that the subspace field generators in the engines could only safely maintain Full Impulse (which was now 0.95c) for 30 minutes constant. After that, they had to cool down for at least two-thirds of that time.

Testing of the Hyper Impulse Engine system showed that, even Starfleet's largest vessel, the Odyssey class, became surprisingly nimble without the tendency of oversteer as seen in much smaller vessels such as the Norway class... and now significantly faster than any known design at sublight speeds.

The Hyper-Impulse Engine that was a success on the Lotus had now become standard issue for newly constructed starships, while the older ones would receive this upgrade upon their next refit. After a year of testing within the ships assignated to the elite Starfleet division of Lotus Fleet, the new drive was ready to be put into mass production for all ships. The integration produced no problems except on smaller vessels like the Sabre and Defiant, which had to have individual designs created for their irregular shapes. By 2410, all vessels in the fleet that were constructed after 2408 had received the upgrade.

While other major Alpha Quadrant powers are racing to develop this technology, the Federation is the only one to put this technology to use on their vessels. For the time being, it gives them a large advantage in tactical situations. It was thought that the Borg had similar technology before their final downfall.

During the discovery and exploration of the Azimuth Horizon anomaly, the intense cosmic disturbances it caused would literally drain all power from a ship's engines except for thrusters. A prototype shielded impulse drive was developped by renegade engineers of a religious cult known as the Horizon's Children and captured by a lotus Fleet officer. On Starbase 10, chief engineer Marksus Sangliar studied the new design and further enhanced it by rebuilding it along the lines of an antique V8 combustion engine, with several small impulse engines firing one after the other to repower one another as one was depleted during use and reenergized and declogged by maintenance systems and reserve batteries. With the new shielding provided, it gave a new kind of impulse engine capable of working at full efficiency even in areas of severe distorsion or clogging effects like dense nebulae or a star's corona. The Sangliar Impulse Drive was therefore given to the Millenium design as with any other Lotus Fleet starship, so as to have it better suited to face unknown conditions in other universes which might have different physical laws.

LTL Type: Four Aegis Class Sangliar-modified mass drivers developed and built by Terminal Velocity Propulsion. Part of the Aegis system, the hyper-impulse is the central part of the entire synergical upgrade of deflector and shield technology used on the Millenium class and is the most fuel economical, easy to operate and maintain propulsion system yet devized by Starfleet.Output: Each engine (there are four impulse engines each composed of eight compact impulse reactors and engines) can propel a Millenium-class vessel at speeds just under .25c at “Full Impulse” and an upper ceiling of .75c at three quarters the speed of light. Generally, Starfleet Vessels are restricted to .25c speeds to avoid the more dramatic time dilation effects of higher relativistic speeds. However, such restrictions can be overridden at the behest of the ship’s captain. Due to the size of the Impulse Engines found on the Millenium class, a single engine can propel the vessel at standard operating speeds without a loss in standard class performance or combat maneuverability.

Impulse Systems

  • Number of Engines: 2 primary (hull), 2 auxilliary (pylons)
  • Power Source: eight-synchronized shielded Shuttle XI Class Mass Drivers.
  • Number of Reactors: 4
  • Power Output: 84 Gigawatts
  • Maximum Impulse Velocity: 0.75 Speed of Light (without time dilation effect) for 12 hours (indefinitely with dilation)
  • Maximum Standard Impulse Velocity: 0.25 C (full impulse)

In Red Alert situations, all four impulse drives are activated to provide exceptional speed and maneuverability equal to a much smaller class type or acceleration without time dilation effects with timedrive on.

REACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

Type:Version 4 Magneto-Hydrodynamic Gas-Fusion. The Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters are adapted from thruster packages from the successful Galaxy-class vessel. A total of thirty five thruster groups are installed; ten on the primary hull, five on the secondary hull and five at the aft of each nacelle. Deuterium is supplied by the primary tankage on Decks 13 and 14, as well as immediate-use tanks within thruster package.

Number: 35 groups distributed all around the ship's spaceframe.

Output: Each thruster quad can produce 4.5 million Newtons of exhaust (usable in atmospheric flight for a speed of mach 25 and thus can routinely achieve and maintain standard orbit on all M class type planets with thrusters alone)

    QUANTUM SLIPSTREAM DRIVE PROPULSION SYSTEM

The quantum slipstream drive is an advanced form of interstellarpropulsion allowing starships to break through the warp speed barrier. By creating a small artificial stable quantum stream wormhole around the ship much in the manner of a warp field, the QSD drive instead of warping space punches through the fabric of reality in an interphased quantum state, allowing displacement comparable to over 2.5 million times the speed of light in Einsteinian space. The crew of the USS Voyager acquired the technology in 2374 from Species 116 in the Delta Quadrant. A later test of the drive in 2375 nearly led to the destruction of Voyager, and it was decided to put the use of the device on hold.

Generating slipstream corridors requires more power than forming warp fields; the power required is directly related to the frontal geometry of a vessel and lesser so the ship geometry. Therefore, slipstream propelled ships are generally narrow and compact with aerodynamic lines. In 2380, the Vesta-class Federation starship was designed to test and use this new propulsion system. The USS Aventine was among the first Starfleet vessels to be fitted with a quantum slipstream drive.

By 2381, following the third defeat of the Borg, Starfleet began installing quantum slipstream drives on its vessels, but due to the nature of the technology not all ships were compatible with the upgrade. Later, a small contingent of Starfleet vessels, including Voyager, was outfitted with the drives in order to explore the Delta Quadrant in greater detail, and to learn any information available about the Borg.

Unknown to Starfleet, Starfleet enginner B'Elanna Torres had managed to recreate the technology from memory and outfitted a small vessel with the drive to evade a fanatical Klingon sect pursuing her daughter. This however proved that the technology was not related to ship size, as long as enough power could be provided for the QSD to work properly. At the same time, starships in Project Full Circle experienced microfractures in their benamite crystals. Voyager's Chief Engineer Nancy Conlon deduced that within three months all the starships in the Delta Quadrant would have to return home if the problem was not solved. Security Chief Harry Kim took Nancy Conlon to B'Elanna Torres's personal shuttle, modified with B'Elanna's own version of a quantum slipstream drive and a benamite recrystallization matrix. A conversation between the current and former chief engineers of Voyager resulted in B'Elanna Torres agreeing to adapt her design for use on all of the ships assigned to Project Full Circle.

In 2382, the Breen accepted a mission on behalf of the Typhon Pact and sent an operative to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards to capture data pertaining to the quantum slipstream drive. The Breen were soon after contracted to build the first Typhon Pact prototype slipstream vessel. The lead researcher of the project, Thot Keer, intentionally withheld information from the other members relating to the drive's development in order to promote the Breen to a level of Pact authority of equal standing to the Romulans. Shortly before the initial trials, the prototype, its designer, and all information relating to the project were destroyed. This incident however hinted at the possibility of using other power systems than the standard matter-antimatter reaction with the QSD and provided a crucial step towards the chronodrive.

The Millenium class starship was initially developed as the new breed of scout and steath long range ship. However the threat of invasion from the Borg forced Starfleet to put the design on a fast developpement track and mobilize it for the immediate application of the quantum slipstream drive to bring the fight to the Borg instead; and the hull configuration of the Millenium class offered the best one to apply such technology effectively and on a large enough spaceframe to include a power core powerful enough to sustain the effect the slipstream. The discovery of the stable, artificial Bajoran wormhole in 2369 led to new insights into the creation of navigable wormholes. Following the introduction of the Quantum particle (a unique power source) from the QSD technology, Starfleet pursued the development, adding a twin navigational deflector to utilise wormhole technology and allow instantaneous travel in order to deploy fleets of ships in the Delta Quadrant.

        COMPUTER SYSTEMS

        4.1 COMPUTER CORE

Bio-Neural Gel Packs:Referred to typically as BNGs, Bio-Neural Gel Packs are a the standard technology in 25th century shipboard data processing and routing. Mounted at strategic locations along the ODN pathways, each BNG consists of an artificial bio-fluid that allows transmission of neural signals. The heart of the BNG is a packet of neural clusters, grown copies of strands similar to those found in the brains of sentient beings. These clusters give the ship’s computer ‘instinctive’ data processing and routing ability as well as allowing the ship’s computer to utilize ‘fuzzy logic’ to speed up probability calculations much as a living entity would. By distributing gel packs throughout a starship's computer system information can be organized more efficiently, therefore processed more quickly and speeding up response time.

        Developed for the
Intrepid class, this type of computer system did not see full deployment until the launch of that class. Aboard these starships, the new system proved successful, although the biological nature of the packs has initially led to problems such as infection and subsequent slowdown of the computer processing powers. Despite this shortcoming, Starfleet Command allowed the viability of using the packs fleetwide. Both nature and possible failings combining as much engineering as medical causes gave birth to a new science well beyond cybernetics and robotics called bionics; the blend of biological and technical sciences to faithfully reproduce artificially systems and functions of living organisms with inorganic materials.

Given the tremendous processing needs that temporal and transdimensional travel required, Project
Millenium decided to utilize the BNG system for the Millenium class. But the unprecedented complexities of transdimensional and temporal displacement of ship and crew required computering power even well beyond this and a whole, new approach was demanded out of this technology; a computer that could think and react with the speed and efficiency of an electronic device but with the flexibility and adaptability of a living brain. In short, a genuine artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence: As the Federation closed out the 24th century, it left behind a time of both great expansion and great turmoil. To quote the 34th and 35th Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, both war and peace are "good for business," and nowhere is this evidenced more than in the field of Emergent Technologies. One of the more intriguing, outlandish, and highly controversial theorems currently in development by the Emergent Technologies Division is that of the "self-aware starship," a vessel that for all intents and purposes is considered to be alive and a sentient being unto itself.

The concept of the "sentient machine" is not a particularly new one. For centuries, it has filled countless tomes of fiction and most starfaring races have continuously advanced towards various forms of so-called "artificial intelligence," albeit haltingly. Several examples among alien cultures have been uncovered, most notably the androids of Exo III by the late Dr. Roger Korby and the discovery of the extragalactic androids of planet Mudd in the 2260s. Sadly, the instances of the fabled "machine run amok" have become all too ingrained in the mind of the general public, the case of Dr. Richard Daystrom and the ill-fated M5 tests of 2267 being first and foremost, followed by lesser but still worrying cases like the Val planetary computer and the Landru sentient system discovered the year before.

Still, there remain far more benign examples of "intelligent" hardware. Going as far back as the late 20th century, human scientists experimented with the beginings of what they termed "intuitive hardware," the efforts of Nova Technologies and the Forbin Project being at the forefront. As mankind ventured out to the stars, automated subroutines to detect and manage anomalies without human interaction became necessary. However, it was not until 2338 and the discovery of the android Data that the first true artificial intelligence was made readily available to Federation science. Designed and built by Dr. Noonien Soong, Mr. Data has since graciously volunteered himself to build on his creator’s work. To date, only one attempt at building another Soong-type android has been made within the Federation, by Data himself, but it experienced a total cascade failure after only a short time of consciousness. The Romulans' own attempt in cloning Data himself yielded only to a version barely better than a conventional robot; it took the direct tranference of Data's own memory ingrams to bring it to self-awareness.

Mr. Data’s discovery however had a profound impact and many of his systems were studied and incorporated into existing technologies. Similarly, his programming allowed for a grand advancement in intuitive software in the 2350s. Programmers working on the Galaxy Class Project utilized small portions of Data’s basecode when writing the initial operating system for that class of starship. When the USS Galaxy was commissioned in 2357, she became the first vessel to have what was referred to as "humanware:" the ship’s computer, although not sentient, outwardly presented a vocal interface designed to be more pleasant towards crews. Later that same year, the Galaxy class USS Enterprise made formal first contact with the Borg. Numerous other encounters with this race yielded massive amounts of technological information. Although technically not an artificial intelligence, studies of the Borg hive mind structure as well as captured hardware allowed great insight into the practical combination of biological and mechanical technologies to form a single integrated being. These analyses along with information about the Bynar race and their dependence upon a vast central planetary computer network jumpstarted bionics and, in 2370, introduced the bioneural gelpack computer system.

However, all of these foundational programs are all intentional undertakings with a very clear and defined goal. As history shows, some of the most important scientific discoveries have occurred through accidental circumstances: Fleming’s taking notice of a piece of mold led to penicillin and Govok’s archaeological digs led to the discovery of dilithium and the Second Periodic Table. Chance and Luck have always been the patrons of science and that has given rise to two unique situations.

In late 2370, the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise passed through a magnascopic storm in the Mekorda sector. An apparent seed of unknown origin was placed within the ship’s main computer core, creating interconnective nodes through the vessel, interlinking the various ship’s systems in what was soon recognized to be a form of neural network, similar to that of Data's positronic net. The resultant network enabled the developing intelligence to take control of Enterprise and direct it toward a nearby white dwarf star, which it then mined as a source of vertion particles and directed them towards Cargo Bay 2 where ship’s replicator and transporter systems rapidly constructed a body. Upon full development, this emergent lifeform then exited the ship and the interconnective nodes throughout the ship’s circuitry disappeared, returning all systems to normal.

The second situation is a phenomenon with an increasing rate of occurrence within the Federation, that of the sentient holographic program. The first instance of this condition took place in early 2365, again aboard USS Enterprise. During a recreational holodeck adventure, Lt Cmdr Data and Lt Geordi LaForge, assuming the roles of Sherlock Holmes, & Dr. Watson respectively, inadvertently caused the creation of a sentient hologram in the form of Holmes’ archnemesis, Professor James Moriarty. The Moriarty character reached consciousness when it was given full access to the knowledge contained within the ship’s main computer. This caused the creation of a new sentience, one that wished to leave the confines of the holodeck. Capt Jean-Luc Picard persuaded Moriarty to remain within the ship’s protected memory core until a manner in which he could be transubstantiated off the holodeck could be devised. Four years later, In mid-2369, an Enterprise technician doing routine maintenance on the holodeck systems accidentally reactivated Moriarty, who then made the same demands as before... and that they bring the love of his life, a recreation of Countess Regina Bartholomew, off the grid too so that he could join her. Both sentient programs were placed into protected memory and the core block removed from the control arch in a portable power source, then relayed to Starfleet’s Holographic Technologies Division at Jupiter Station for continued existence and interactive study and monitoring. Through interaction on the station massive hologrid, scientists were able to investigate how this sentience came about. This, with adaptation of many of Mr. Data’s subroutines, entailed Dr. Lewis Zimmerman to create the Emergency Medical Hologram program. First tested on the Intrepid-class, the EMH was a radical piece of holoprogramming. Combining an impressive multicultural medical database with a vast array of variable programs, the EMH had the ability to adapt to a new situation as well as learn from past experiences and create new procedures. Designed as a short-term emergency solution, the programs were utilized quite extensively on smaller ships and in crisis situation until late 2373, when the EMH Mark 2 and then 3 and 4 were introduced and finally the Long-term photonic officer in 2377, designed to supplement crews on vessels on isolated, long term assignments.

A problem encountered at some facilities on the EMH Mark 1 was that the program seemed to exhibit signs of instability as it rapidly outgrow the parameters set by the programming, as evidenced by the Vic Fontaine entertainment hologram of space station DS9. In most cases, this required that the program be completely recompiled from its core parameters and was part of the reason behind Starfleet’s decision to withdraw the Mark 1 from service. It was not until 2374 that Starfleet learned of a still-active EMH Mark 1 program. When USS Voyager was pulled by an alien intelligence 75,000 light-years across the galaxy, the only doctor aboard was killed in the transit. Capt Kathryn Janeway was forced to utilize her EMH program as a full-time doctor. The seven years of nearly continuous operation by the EMH caused it to outgrow its initial program limitations like the other Mark 1s had. However, due to the unique nature of Voyager’s situation, it was not subjected to recompilation. Within a year of its first activation,Voyager’s EMH was for all intent and purposes a fully sentient being and recognized as such by the crew. Upon Voyager’s return to Federation space in 2378, "The Doctor’s" sentience was legally affirmed and he was accorded the same rights as any other sentient being.

Soon after Starfleet reestablished regular contact with USS Voyager in 2376, The Doctor was contacted by a member of the Emergent Technologies Division regarding the self-modification of his program. Dr. Victor Day Storm, head of the team that had pioneered the bioneural gelpack system, was a keen follower of the work of such noted men as Dr. Noonien Soong, Dr. Ira Graves, & especially Dr. Richard Daystrom (who unknown to everyone until 2410 was his great gradnfather, his real name being Daystrom which his grandfather had had legally changed decades before). Besides being one of the Federation’s top authorities in computer sciences and cybernetics, Dr. Storm was also a pioneer in the field of bionics, the creation, study, and development of the emergent nature, lifespan, and continued evolution of a constantly evolving biomechanical life and sentience.

By that time, the Dominion war entered its final stages. Starfleet had designed a new kind of heavy warship, the Achilles class siege heavy battlecruiser, to strike deep and potent blows against the only perceived weakness, the Achilles' heel, of the Dominion at the time; the dependency of their Jem'Hadar troops on ketracel white, a substance necessary to maintain them alive and dependent. Despite tremendous initial success when first test-deployed in the field, Starfleet wanted such a ship to be able to perform its mission even if the entire crew was out of commission and so, despite virulent protests and heated debates, asked for yet again a computerized system capable of handling alone a starship. Storm saw there the opportunity to redeem his ancestor's memory by succeeding where he had failed... and like him came up with a "whole, new approach." He made a passionate proposal and, with the Federation on the verge of defeat, it was authorized to be implemented on the prototype.

Combining neurogelpack hardware with positronic software and adaptative subroutines of the holographic matrix, Storm literally built an artifically made brain, structurally identical in all respect, with an isolinear core as its basic brain stem, surrounded by a neocortex of gel packs, all connected with a positronic grid of neurones able to multiply and reconnect through holographic construction. It was for all intent and purposes a living brain made of artifical components. Storm however made sure the M5 syndrome would not strike his own creation: the laws of robotics were made an integral part of its hardware, four lobes were constructed to counter psionic and neurogenic influences and no faillible human ingrams were imprinted; instead, the artifical brain would learn and develop like a true living one, with careful education and care.

The whole idea was not all that new, but it had been deemed unfeasible at the time because there was no way to pack so much technology inside a humanoid-sized format; Data's own positronic brain was still centuries ahead of its time and attempt to emulate him had all failed. But such problems disappeared instantly when considering a brain the size of a starship main computer core.

By early 2373, all the necessary modifications had been made and THETIS (Test Human-Emulating Technical Intelligence and Sentience) was brought online for the first time. Immediately, the ship shut down completely but, fortunately, it had been evacuated; and slowly over the period of two hours, systems came back online one by one. This was all done under Dr. Storm's watchful eye, and the project director noted that the total systems shutdown and subsequent ordered return was not unlike that of an organic being’s autonomic functions starting up during gestation. it took merely minutes for Thetis to grow familiar with her surroundings, what has become her "body," the USS Achilles, learn about itself and access its database. The system as a whole did indeed act much as an organic being would: sections of the vessel not in use would be put on standby until needed, repairs would be carried out by autonomous drones connected to the system and security systems safeguarded it from living or technical intrusions. In a surprising discovery made by Dr. Storm, Thetis had accessed the holodeck and occasionally ran programs in it for no reason at all. Furthermore, the holoprograms being run would occasionally distract the computer; the doctor linked this to a person with an overactive imagination being caught daydreaming.

Daydreaming would turn out to be only the first of many surprises for the team. Thetis had been running for eighteen days straight and the system had already developed quite radically. The team had anthropomorphized the computer system as scientists and engineers so often do and now referred to it as "she" among themselves and even nicknamed her "Tess". "Tess" showed extreme adaptability and marvelous problem solving abilities; new maintenance drones had been modified or designed and created by her in order to more easily manage any new situation. Still, no one was prepared the morning that the doctor came on board and was greeted face-to-face by someone he had never seen before; a young, blonde-haired, blue-eyed teenage girl wearing a Starfleet cadet uniform. Immediately reaching for his comlink to call for security to apprehend the intruder, he was stopped by the sound of a familiar voice greeting him: "Good morning Doctor; yes, I'm Tess."

Over the past few months, Thetis had been examining the organic members of the project team just as they had been examining her and had come to the conclusion that she could not evolve further in her present form. She had discovered the old EMH holomatrix templates imbedded in her programming and begun to modify and use them to craft a new holographic humanoid form for herself and project it through the EMH hologrid of the ship. Tess then admitted to feel "nervous" about the first face to face meeting with her "father."Taking a day to absorb the shock of Thetis not only creating an avatar for herself but also proclaiming the existence of emotions, Dr. Storm made a decision; he returned the next day and asked Tess to allow the team to take her offline for a week so that they could study any physical changes made in the core out support systems. She agreed. Then, minutes after her creator disembarked to perform preparations for this study, all station's systems except life support went offiline and the USS Achilles - now rechristened USS Nemesis when AI research and refit of her was classified- tore away from her docking pylon and warped out. Pursuing ships never found her again outside of unconfirmed rumors months later of a strange ghostship in the Mutara sector.

Starfleet was understandably annoyed that a rogue AI in command of a powerful warship had thus, again, escaped control despite all precautions taken... and now might be roaming around. A board of Inquiry found from the research data that there were literally millions of new pathways laid out by Thetis after her activation. These functioned much in the same way that the organic brain created new wrinkles when new information is gathered. Systems that were only loosely tied together eighteen days prior were now so completely bound together that they were almost as interdependent as any of those found in an organic being. Also of great shock was the discovery that when Thetis had compromised the monitoring subsystems, she had used them as a gateway out into the world, thus overriding the supposedly controlled stream of data the Emergent Technologies team had fed him. It was then understood that this violation of its original programming had been prompted by the AI's own conclusion that the project team members had also acted counter to their "original programming" in attempting to control her evolution. Now that they had found out, Thetis reasoned that, because she had become too much self-aware and autonomous, they would shut her down -kill her- for her violation. like it had been done to the M5 unit... or else, either confine her forever as with the Moriarty program or, as for the EMH Mark 1, effectively lobotomize her, denying her sentience... and so, frightened but still bound by her own ingrained ethics, she did the only thing she could to survive: she ran away.

To correct this perceived disaster, Dr. Storm petitioned Starfleet and the Federation Science Council to be given access to a device that few knew about: the recorded ingrams of former Federation genius Dr Ira Graves. His argument was that, once those were integrated into Thetis' matrix, his own survival would reassure the AI's, restabilize her psyche and convince her that there was no ill-will towards her. After many months of debate, his request was finally denied, the Science Council citing the sensitive nature of the classified record and Starfleet citing the M5 incident. Dr. Storm vocally expressed his disagreement with the decision and composed a letter to T’Hest, the Speaker of the Science Council and to Admiral Quinn of Starfleet Command. Still, no amount of lobbying would change the minds of either organization.

Dr. Storm then decided to take matters into his own hands. He planned a way to steal those classified recorded brain patterns, find the missing starship and "cure" his beloved child; make "Tess" whole again and prove to all how wrong they were about his "child." It took him over twenty years to find her again, recognizing her in the "ghost ship" of the Mutara nebula and to find an opportunity to get to her. Mascarading as a retired admiral, he tricked the elite division of Lotus Fleet into giving him use of the USS Artemis and get to the Mutara sector. he knew Tess would recognize him and allow him to help her and bring her back. Unfortunately, a religious cult of fanatics had targeted the Artemis at that same moment for its own purpose and prevented him from doing so... And then, things took a turn for the worse; in an attempt to take over the lost vessel too, the cultists linked a sentient holographic being to the AI ship but, instead, it confused the now dormant AI so much that it reawakened with the personality of historical terrorist Khan Noonien Singh, now in full control of the most powerful warship ever devized by Starfleet. Only the courageous actions of the Artemis crew stopped the now mad AI from threatening the Federation, succeeding in exiling it powerless to the edge of the galaxy.

Dr Storm was arrested and left in a deep depressive state in the hands of Federation authorities. but his idea did not go away with him.

The Emergent Technology Division had in the meantime fallen under the authority of the Office of Temporal Investigations, who's interest was in the possibility of preserving History from tampering within some form of artificial intelligence shielded from alterations in the timeline. They studied Storm's work and found it not only sound but actually successful, despite the circumstances that had lead to its loss. They established from the Achilles incident that Storm had been right all along; the problem had arisen because they had been dishonest and manipulative towards a sentient being that had given them complete trust and, from the start, treated like an object and later betrayed. The solution was amazingly simple: treat the AI like an actual living child, provide it with care and education and the correct mixture of restraint and freedom until it was "mature enough to drive..." As this AI model was the only one available that could fulfill the requirements of their project Millenium of a transdimensional starship, the OTI worked on recreating Storm's system, but this time in a specially isolated lab on an isolated moon within a classified star system. there it would grow and develop like a child in his parents home until ready to choose its own destiny; hopefully to serve in Starfleet.

The gamble was high... but as one agent Dulmur argued: "no more than for any parent in this galaxy since the dawn of life."

By then, the USS Horizon had again found the USS Achilles at the edge of the gakaxy during it's transwarp trial runs, battling once again the Khan recreation and defeating it. In the process, Tess was liberated from the Achilles computer core by then Commander Jureth Oseno as the huge computer systems of the Lotus class barely activated had enough, albeit barely enough, storage capacity to contain her in a dormant state. Commander Joey Day Sisko also  of the Horizon tasked himself with the ambitious project of giving her an Android interface inspired from Captain Data of the Enterprise E to allow her to truly exist and interact fully with living beings in a better way than as a hologram dependent on hologrid systems.

All the while, the OTI worked to establish their new approach with Tess. Everything went exactly as it had happened on the inital attempt; everything except the complications that had caused the runaway final incident; and as with the original Voyager's Doctor, no name was given to the AI; it would choose its own, just like it would choose its own life, once it would have matured. As expected, the AI matured ten times faster than a Human would have; in two years, it had reached the level of consciousness and sum of experiences of a twenty years old Human, and far exceeded any living being's knowledge and mental prowess short of actual psionics. Now declared "adult", it was offered the choice of what would be its life. To the pleasure and relief of all, it declared that it would opt to do the only thing that could truly expand its knowledge and its "life" to the fullest of its capabilities: serve in Starfleet to "see the stars... and more." And then it astounded everyone by requesting to be allowed to serve on board the upcoming transdimensional starship.

The Millenium project might have been a classified project to everyone... but not to the most powerful artificial intelligence ever created.

The AI was submitted to the entire Starfleet curriculum just as Data had been decades ago and completed it with High Honors in less than six months. As it went through the official program like any organic cadet despite its isolation, it needed an identity. To the astonishment of all, it chose the identity of a tall, statuesque black-haired, green-eyed Bajoran female and the name Jureth Tess, in honor of the Lotus Fleet officer of the USS Horizon who had managed to free her from the Achilles. She graduated with the rank of Lt JG in the Operations Division and, with Starfleet Command's approval, officially assigned as the yeoman of the USS Millenium. As the ship's computer, she was best suited to do all the data storage and logs, the captain's administrative work and assist him in the running of the ship. Through the android interface provided for her, she would assume standard duties and stations on board. As the Laws of Robotics were ingrained in her, she would follow Starfleet's chain of command to the letter; and as a failsafe, the more standard secondary computer core was able to override her if any problem would arise, much like a security officer could control a failing crewmember. The flawless result of this latest experiment and these built-in failsafes allowed the OTI the use the AI in actual service on its experimental transdimensional starship, where her performance would be evaluated by her captain and First Officer as for any other organic crewmate... and rewarded or sanctioned accordingly.

        Number of computer cores:

Three; The primary AI "brain" core occupies space on decks 5-6 and 7 and is divided into two distinct cores running in unison, much like the two hemispheres of the Human brain. The secondary, engineering section core is a sturdy standard isolinear system. smaller in size to the first and is located adjacent to Environmental Control on deck 8. Incapable of doing the incredibly complex calculations for transdimensional and time travel modes, it is nevertheless quite sufficient for managing the regular starship systems for space operations; like the cerebellum of the Human brain, it handles routinely all basic ship functions and can act as a failsafe system in case the main computer is or has to be put offline; a further precaution against the "M5 threat," as it is completely not only independent of the main computer but monitor it in a constant diagnostic mode, alert the crew of any malfunction and can overide it with the proper command codes.

A third compact standard computer similar to what is installed on shuttlecrafts is on deck 11 and act as the reptilian brain of this artificial brain construct. Alone it can only manage the basic technical functions of the ship (life support, standard propulsion, sensor, navigation and tactical systems and minimal data retrieval) but it also acts as a third check to the AI assembly, reinforcing the Asimov Laws for the whole computer system and constantly diagnosing the other two.

Type:The components of the THETIS Bio-Neural Super-series computer core is built under contract for the Millenium-class vessel by Krayne Systems, an independent contractor based on Bynar, but assembled in a secret facility under direct supervision by the Emergent Technologies Division of the Temporal Investigations Office and Starfleet Intelligence. The structure of the computer is a complete departure from that of all other supercomputing systems in use by Federation vessels with a Mark VII-T data storage and retrieval core built in a brainstem configuration stacked BNG in a neocortex structure connected to stack segments extending through the ship like a central nervous system of a living organism, forming trillions of trillions of connections through the processing and storage abilities of modern BNG systems. The core essentially consists of four independent processing systems that work in concert for maximum performance just like the four hemispheres of the Ferengi mind, making it immune to mental intrusion by psionic/neurogenic energies. Bio-neural-based processors throughout the core are utilized for complex calculations as well as storage and cataloguing of core information. Cooling of the system is accomplished by a regenerative liquid helium loop, which has been refit to allow the usage of a delayed-venting heat storage unit for "Silent Running” operations that require the highest level of starship stealth. For most missions, requirements on the computer core rarely exceed 20% of a single core's processing and storage capacity. The rest of the core is utilized for various scientific, tactical, or intelligence gathering missions or to backup data in the event of a damaged core; 60% of processing power is required when transdimensional or temporal operations are called for, equating 300% of any conventional computer system.

Soong-type Android interface: an advanced robotic humanoid shell modeled after the holographic image chosen by the AI was constructed. It has all the superior physical capabilities of the Soong androids but the mental functions are linked to the ship's computer. Out of contact with the ship, the android revert to a simple automaton only capable of obeying direct commands for physical tasks only, although still fully committed to the Asimovian Laws.

Complementary data system: Mark VII-T refers to a type of information storage or retrieval device primarily used by the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations. Mark VII-T devices use triple-redundant temporal phase discriminators in order to prevent "real" historical data from being corrupted by timeline changes. Successfully tested in the field during the USS Spectre's mission to restore the timeline from the Kelvin aberration, it is not only an integral part of the core of the THETIS system but also fully installed into the secondary isolinear computer core, to ensure full protection for the crew against changes in the timeline. The Emergency Holographic Doctor is linked to this protected basic core and can alert and debrief the captain in case of such alteration unnoticed by the living crew (protocol Pocket Watch).

        TACTICAL DEPARTMENT

This multi-room department is located in a Restricted area on deck 4. Within it are the entrances to the phaser range, the Brig, the auxiliary weapon control room and to the Ship's Secondary Armory, as well as the Chief Security & Tactical Officer's office. Given the nature of the Millenium class, the tactical department facilities is larger and much more complex than even other starships of its size. Not only do the Department Offices include additional office space for security staff, but they include additional briefing rooms and staging areas for security personnel.

The CTO's office is decorated to the officer's preference. It contains a work area, a personal viewscreen, a computer display, and a replicator.

Brig: Located on deck 4, the brig is a restricted access area whose only entrance is from within the Security department. The Millenium class vessel has 10 double occupancy cells, which contain beds, a table and chairs, a water dispenser, and a toilet, all holographic and using a combination of photonic imagery, low level forcefields and low grade transporter systems (so prisoners can have sanitary conditions but cannot use a chair to clobber a guard). The cells are secured with a level 10 forcefield emitter built into each doorway and a manual sliding reinforced door in case of power failure or restrictions or to restrain creatures able to ignore forcefields like the Borg. Each brig is in fact a secured holosuite able to assume a wide variety of "historical settings" in case time natives are to be incarcerated. Thus, a medieval prisoner would beleive being in a stone-walled dungeon while a 21st century one would beleive being held in a governmental cellroom. All interrogations are conducted through holographic avatars with proper look and attire for the specific prisoner to avoid all risks to personel or any risk of hostage situations.

Ship's Primary Armory: This room is located in a restricted area on deck 9 and is under constant guard. The room is sealed with a level 10 forcefield and can only be accessed by personnel with Alpha 3 security clearance. Inside the armory is a work area for maintenance and repair of phasers as well as multiple sealed weapon lockers. The Millenium Class carries enough type-I and type-II phasers to arm the entire crew but, like all weapons on board, they have to be genetically encoded to the user to work and they are locked into stun setting unless a command code is given from an appropriately designated officer. Type-III phaser rifle and the new compression phaser rifles are available as well, but only in enough numbers to arm approximately 1/3 of the crew, normally the entire security personnel and senior officers only. Heavy ordnance is available in limited numbers.

Ship's Secondary Armory:This room is located in a restricted area on deck 2 and is under constant guard. The room is sealed with a level 10 forcefield and can only be accessed by personnel with Alpha 3 security clearance. It is identical to the main armory in all respect but only senior officers can use its content, already keyed to their genetic code and personal codes.

Bridge Armory: each seat on the bridge has a compartment where can be found a phaser I specifically tuned for the occupying officer, along with a small first-aid kit and spare communicator, both also keyed to the individual when the officer take his post and input his personal code to activate his work station.

Captain's Armory : located in the captain's quarters and only accessible to him through encoding molecular, genetic, vocal and visual, it contains every type of hand weapon on board keyed for his personal use, along with a combat armor and an EVA suit.

Primary Fore Torpedo/Probe Magazine:This restricted area on deck 10 is for storing unarmed torpedoes and science probes I - IX. Also stored here are the components for manufacturing new photon torpedo (from shuttlecraft or probe's miniature antimatter core) as well as the equipment to put it all together. This room is also accessed by the loading mechanism for the torpedo launchers.

Secondary Torpedo/Probe Magazine:This restricted area on deck 5 is identical to the primary one albeit smaller in size and content and located so as to quickly supplement both fore and aft magazine as needed.

Aft Torpedo/Probe Magazine: This restricted area on deck 5 is identical to the primary one to service the aft launchers.

        TACTICAL SYSTEMS

        ENERGY WEAPONS

Phaser arrays: The Millenium class currently employs eight Type-XII double phaser arrays at key locations throughout the ship's hull, six less than the standard frigate, as some allowances had to be made for the improved systems of the M class variant. Traditionally, the choice defensive weapon onboard Starfleet vessels since close to the dawn of the Federation, the standard emitter makes use of a particular class of superconducting crystals known as fushigi-no-umi, which allow high-speed interactions within atomic nuclei that create a rapid nadion effect, which in turn is directed into a focused beam at a target.Through the use of Annular Confinement jacketed beams, phaser arrays now have limited capabilities in warp environments, though the power output is greatly limited and is by no means as useful as a torpedo weapon in this environment. The Type-XII shipboard array is the most powerful phaser to be fielded by starships to date.

Phaser array arrangement: two dorsal phaser arrays on the primary hull, one extending around the saucer section. Two more arrays, roughly a quarter of the size of the original, cover the aft dorsal firing arcs and are located along the aft portion of the saucer section. Two ventral phaser arrays on the primary hull, extending around in nearly a half circle on both the starboard and port ventral sides of the saucer section. A final pair of phaser arrays, harking back to the belly phaser of the Galaxy Class engineering hull, is located along the ventral section of the engineering hull, running perpendicular to the hull, one fore and one aft.

Phaser Type:The Millenium class utilizes the current starship armament technology, the Type XIIA array system. Each array fires a steady beam of phaser energy, and the forced-focus emitters discharge the phasers at speeds approaching .986c (which works out to about 296,000 kilometers per second - nearly warp one). The phaser array automatically rotates phaser frequency and attempts to lock onto the frequency and phase of a threat vehicle's shields with tactical sensors for increased shield penetration.

Phaser Array Output:Each phaser array takes its energy directly from the impulse drives and auxiliary fusion generators. Individually, each type XII -emitter can only discharge approximately 8.0 MW (megawatts) per second. However, several emitters (usually two) fire at once in the array during standard firing procedures, resulting in a discharge approximately 10 MW (89,000 Terajoules).

What put the phaser emitters of the Millenium design apart however is the improvement given to the energy signature output variance (the A on their MK XIIA designation s for "Adaptative"). The normal capacity of phasers to be reconfigured to various effects (beam, pulse, fan, energy transfer, power variance etc) combined with the now standard frequency rotating capability was enhanced so that, although power and effects do not differ, the resulting energy signature can be altered to reproduce that of antique laser beams, old-style phaser banks, disruptors, tetryon, plasma, antiproton or other types of energy beams used by known spacefaring cultures throughout History. this feature helps the Millenium class in benefiting from its full tactical power without fear of leaving anachronistic traces that could reveal its true time-travelling nature.

This feature is part of Temporal Prime Directive Order 2 along with the Power Signature Variance and the Holographic Camouflage systems.

Phaser Array Range:Maximum effective range is 300,000 kilometers.
        Primary purpose:Assault
        Secondary purpose:Defense/anti-spacecraft/anti-fighter/energy transfer

Energy dissipipator cannons: The standard frigate class vessel has four phaser cannons; this massive firepower was deemed necessary for a class designed as behind the line heavy operator. As the Millenium class variant has a totally different mission profile and very different power requirements for its unique systems, these were significantly reduced in number and replaced with a new experimental type of weaponry specifically adapted to its special mandate: the energy dissipator cannon.

EDC arrangement: two of them covers all the forward angles of the ship, each on a forty-five degree angle, with phaser frequency rotating program to counter standard defense against its effect and Intrepid-type sensor link to adjust to energy shielding of the target for greater penetration, again just like phasers do. However, the EDC has the capability to drain power to all systems and shields of the targets. Even regenerative ablative armor will fail under this effect, the only known type of weaponry that can challenge this powerful defensive coverage.

Weapon type: based on Federation stun technology, Borg gravimetric charge effect and Breen dissipator technology, they are improved over these original concepts with the same frequency rotation and sensor link program used by modern phasers, making the basic defense against them (changing shield frequency or engine output) now obsolete and ineffective. The EDC discharges an energy pulse is slightly slower than phaser fire (0.9c). The essential purpose of this new type of weaponry is to allow the ship to effectively neutralize threats safely, be they artificial or natural, without causing destruction or loss of life that could possibly impact on either the timeline or a parallel universe's normal developpement. Their use can also be adapted to safely and inconspicuously capture and relocate things and entities out of their proper space-time frame. That is why they have been dubbed "Prime Directive Arrays" by their developpers.

The developpement and deployement of this new kind of tactical technology is part of the overall Temporal Directive Order 3 that also reserved the developpement and deployement of the MKIII chroniton torpedoes for the Millenium class variant.

EDC output: Each energy dissipator takes its energy from either the warp core, impulse reactors, auxilliary power reactors or even batteries as needed. Each can deliver a 20 MW discharge (178,000 Terajoules) that does no damage however. Instead, the discharge neutralize all systems at the point of impact, much like a standard EM pulse, quickly disabling any ship or installation without causing actual damage or loss of life; the discharge will also act as a level III stun setting equally on any lifeform with electrical brain impulses, regardless of being organic, artificial or non-corporeal in form. This new type of weaponry was specifically designed for the Millenium class as its mission parameters severely limits its tactical options regarding the use of conventional weapons. Its high EM charge also allows it to partially bypass shields (for example, the best EM shield protection, that of the Intrepid, Norway and Nova classes at 42%, will therefore see 58% of the discharge go through; most shields can only block out around 20-30%). The overall power discharge also varies with the power source (Warp core 20MW; impulse power 10MW; reactors 5MW; batteries 3MW) and the distance between ship and target (1 W/kilometer).

EDC range: depend on power source: warp power allows maximum range of 2,400,000 kilometers (half of standard torpedo range but eight times phaser range). Impulse power reduces range to 1,200,000 km ; reactors provide a range of 600,000 km while batteries will bring it down to standard phaser range (300,000km).

Primary purpose: Assault and defense against crafts and cosmozoan lifeforms but only by disabling all non-mechanical systems (in effect, affecting anything with any form of electromagnetic impulse, from brainwaves to warp plasma).

        Secondary purpose: escape/infiltration/capture

        PROJECTILE WEAPONS

Arrangement: the swivel-mounted torpedo launcher is the latest development in launcher technology to better accommodate the usage of torpedo-based weapons on less maneuverable starships. Capable of moving 45-degrees port or starboard off the vehicle's primary axis, one under the primary hull pointing forward and the other pointing aft from the secondary hull this new launcher allows for easier tracking of targets at shorter ranges where torpedoes launched from traditional fixed-focus launchers where often unable to track due to the lack of space for course corrections. A custom assembly for the Millenium class, they are second-generation automated launcher and capable of preloading five torpedoes for rapid fire. With the exceptional agility of the Millenium class frame (rated as two classes below it's actual size matching that of a light escort or runabout), this provides the Millenium design to fire torpedoes at an enemy whatever it's angle of attack.

Two are located within the primary hull, both forward; two are on the secondary hull catamaran structure, both aft. Originally developed for the Defiant Class Project, each of these launchers is capable of loading five torpedoes in one salvo, typically launched in an alternating interval to reduce the chance that two projectiles may collide in flight.

        Warhead Type:

-Mark S-II Spatial Torpedoes: exact replicas of the standard 22nd century armament found on the legendary NX class but with launching casing modeled on the standard photon warhead to allow firing in a modern standard tube. 20 of them are available.

-Mark P-XXV Photon Torpedoes; the 25th century latest version of the standard torpedoes of most spacefaring cutlures since the 22nd century. 20 warheads are available.

-Mark Q-II Quantum Torpedoes;the latest version of the late 24th century standard projectiles. 20 warheads are available

-Mark FP-I Plasma Torpedoes; although of Federation fabrication, they perfectly mimic the Romulans one of the 23rd and 24th century. 20 such torpedoes are available. As they are incorporating trilithium isotopes like the original ones, they have the potential to detonate a star into a nova and so are under severe restriction orders to be used only when absolutely necessary.

-Mark T-II Transphasic Torpedoes; the new Federation standard for projectile weapons. The Millenium design however carries but a minimal complement of 20 of them because of its limited use in time travel situations and still having the need for a wider variety of torpedoes to face properly those various settings.

-Mark C-III Chroniton Torpedoes; This is the main payload of the Millenium class variant as part of its policy of non-interference in the timeline and other dimensions, even when facing actual confrontation. These 100 warheads are especially and exclusively developped for the Millenium design. The original MKI Chroniton warhead used by the Krenim Empire of the Delta Quadrant had out-of-time phased shield and hull penetrating capabilities and had been studied extensively by the USS Voyager. Developped from these studies by the Office of Temporal Investigations, the MKII, instead of delivering a destructive payload, detonates by transfering its phasing flux to the target, effectively putting it out of temporal alignement and neutralizing it for a short time (relative to distance travelled: 3,500,000 sec/distance or 40 days within 1 km to 1 sec at max range). The effect is also exponentially cumulative with successive impacts. The MKIII is the MKII model within a standard probe/photon/Quantum torpedo casing to be shot in standard tubes and /or in mixed warheads firing patterns and their residual radiation (chroniton based) dissipates immediately with the effect itself, leaving no trace of advance technology to detect.

A Millenium class starship is therefore outfitted with all types of torpedoes capable of being fired from any launcher on the ship. Because of its peculiar mission profile, which includes disguising capability to minimize timeline interference, the Millenium design comes with this vast array of warheads so as to leave no suspicious anachronistic weapon signature and provide full defensive and offensive versatility if conflict is inevitable.

All torpedoes are built with the same standard photon torpedo casing and capable of pattern firing as well as independent launch. Once in-flight, torpedoes are capable of individual targeting through use of onboard sensors and encrypted feeds from the ship's targeting arrays. Should a threat vessel outmaneuver an inbound torpedo, the weapons package can automatically detonate in an effort to impact the vessel with splash damage. Further, each launcher is capable of pattern firing (sierra, etc.) as well as independent launch.

Payload: standard for the class is 20 of each type of Torpedoes except for the main armament of 100 Chroniton Torpedoes. Due to the complexities involved with manufacture, the deployment of all types of torpedoes except photon warheads is rationed across a relatively small number of fixed and mobile platforms within Starfleet. Should supplies be unavailable for optimum load out, the ship is capable of carrying a maximum of 400 torpedoes of any one type. Because of the lack of a matter-antimatter main reactor, shipboard materials in the form of replicated and off-the-shelf components does not easily allow for the construction of photon torpedo warheads locally (limited antimater may be drained from shuttles and warp-capable probes), while all other torpedoes are only manufactured at secure, undisclosed locations. The only exception is the plasma warhead which can also be produced on board by draining plasma from the EPS conduits instead of venting excess into space, and using trilithium waste product from shuttles and warp-capable probe's propulsion to arm the detonator.

        Range:
Maximum effective range for all types of torpedoes is 4,050,000 kilometers

        Primary purpose:Assault

        Secondary Purpose:Anti-spacecraft

        DEFLECTOR SHIELDS

Because of the looming possibility of reopened hostilities with the Dominion, a total redesign of the Regenerative Shielding system with the express purpose of deploying the new system aboard every Federation starship was called for and, already tested aboard Prometheus and Sovereign classes then successfully adapted to several other designs, notably the Intrepid Class with the refiting of the original USS Lotus in 2410 prior to Operation Horizon. In all those cases, the regenerative shield system proved to work admirably with standard deflector systems in actual field operations and a request for additional testing on existing spaceframes was called for by Starfleet Command. Naturally, the latest design, that of the Odyssey, would come out with the latest version of this shielding system; so would the Lotus and Millenium classes.

Krups Defense Systems, a manufacturer of photon torpedo casings, proposed a new type of shield system. This shield system would automatically and constantly shift its nutation and frequency based on the frequency of the attacking vessel's weaponry. Each time the enemy attacked the shield, it would shift and match the opposing weapons frequency and nutation by reading its output with sensors connected to the shield grid itself, a system first tested on the Intrepid class of short range explorers; this allowed regenerating its power load to the maximum available for defense. This system, known as Project Valkyrie, was in full operational stages on board the Sovereign class vessels and extending to a few others when Project Odyssey was launched. So impressed was Starfleet Command that they signed a specialized product development agreement with Krups for a modern shield system based on the prototypes in the Valkyrie project. So successful was the Valkyrie Project that all starships constructed or refited since 2370 have had this technology integrated into their shield systems. The Chimera class and its later M variant would also benefit from the latest design in this system now called Adaptive Shielding.

The same was done with the integrated implementation of the Metaphasic shielding LaForge Program 1. Originally a Ferengi design then refined by the chief engineer of the Enterprise D who gave it his name, the global energy protection of the metaphasic shield was extensively tested and used right before and during the Operation Horizon of Lotus Fleet when came the time to contain the menace of the ever expanding transdimensional anomaly. Metaphasic configurations provides an effective protection against all forms of non-focused radiation and energies up even to the level of a star's corona for extended periods of time, allowing not only new opportunities for scientific studies but several new military strategies and tactics as well as effective safety measures for space exploration and colonisation. The Millenium class is the first ship to integrate it in its basic shielding configuration but has been followed by all other ship classes currently in service.

Another advancement in shielding, developed by Seinar Fleet Systems, was the concept of Regenerative Shielding. Designed with the Borg in mind, the newly developed Regenerative Shielding was seen as a major step forward in the development of defensive technologies, given the Borg Threat and the newly recognized Dominion threat in those days. The current menace of the Undine and the rumors of belligerent Iconian return has kept the concept very much alive even after the end of the Dominion invasion and the fall of the Collective. The concept behind Regenerative Shielding was to, not only constantly shift the nutation and frequency of the shield while engaged, but also to constantly and completely re-initialize the shield grid, maintaining maximum coverage with maximum protective power during combat situations. This would be accomplished with a redundant system of shield generators - when one particular portion of the grid fell below acceptable levels, back-up generators would immediately activate and strengthen the damaged portion of the grid. When the primary generators rebuilt the shields to standard operating levels, the back-up generators would immediately switch to hot-standby until the shield grid was attacked again. This straightforward concept was never deployed due to the tremendous power requirements to maintain such protection until suitably powerful enough cores could be provided. Seeing the inherent benefit of a starship designed to utilize Regenerative Shielding and after extensive testing in the field with the Sovereign class battleships, SFS delivered thirty shield generators in 2404, where they were stored at Utopia Planitia until completion of the Odyssey hull. Because of increased space and power from the original Sovereign design where this was initially intended, all thirty generators were deployed in the original Odyssey hull. The Millenium class however, although being of much lower tonnage than the Sovereign, did not suffer its limitations; its exceedingly smaller power output is yet more than sufficient, even more when several weapons systems had been removed from the original frigate design to make room for other systems and thus allowed this full power capability.

This shield system benefits from the basic but significant upgrades created by the Sovereign Project that preceded the Odyssey project itself. Originally field tested aboard the prototype U.S.S. Sovereign and extensively field tested first by the U.S.S. Enterprise E, these shields make use of redundant shield generators which alternate coverage on a specific area when integrity drops below a predetermined percentage.

The original Type-6 warp reactor was unable to handle the intense power requirements of this new system, and the Regenerative Shielding was almost scrapped before being successfully implemented in the Prometheus-class prototype. With the installation of General Electric's Type-8 warp reactor, the power demands of the new system were eventually met, allowing for the already-launched U.S.S. Enterprise-E and U.S.S. Monarchy to be refitted while the Sovereign remained in dock at Utopia Planitia. By the time the Odyssey class was commissionned, the type 9 warp reactor was ready for field deployement and so, was installed to allow full use of the improved systems on the new ships of the line.

Because the Millenium design uses a much more compact microsingularity matrix instead of a matter-antimatter one, larger impulse engines could be integrated into the frame and the design can already equate the type 9 reactor in power output and thus allow full use of the shield grid.

Type:Redundant symmetrical subspace graviton field. Regenerative Shield system allows the ship to withstand weapons fire for a significantly longer period of time while the vessel attempt to maneuver out of the weapons lock with as much capability as a Sovereign class battleship. Another ability, learned as a result of the first Borg encounter at System J-25 and incorporated into all Starfleet ships, is the automatic shifting of shield frequencies. During combat, information from the shields linked to tactical sensors is sent to the main computer for analysis where, or with the manual assistance of the tactical officer, the frequency and phase of the incoming weapon is determined. Afterwards, the shields can be reconfigured to match frequency with the weapons fire, but alter its nutation to greatly increase shield efficiency.

The Metaphasic Shielding LaForge program One has also been implemented on the Millenium class starship to further protect the ship from cosmological hazards like ion and plasma storms and stellar forces, following Lotus Fleet's experiences with the Azimuth Horizon anomaly. As the Millenium class would be designed to enter other dimensions where the laws of physics might operate differently, like Fluidic Space, this protection was deemed indispensable for the safety of ship and crew tasked with such mission parameters.

Using the deflector array, Temporal shielding is integrated to safeguard the ship against changes in the timeline or to defend normally against transphasic and chroniton weaponry.

Output: There are thirty shield generators on the Millenium class, each one generating basically 500 MW of output. All together, this results in a total shield strength of 15,000 MW (4,510,000 terajoules) but only little over half of that is in actual use at one time due to the nature of regenerative shielding. The power for the shields is taken directly from the singularity assembly and impulse fusion generators and transferred by means of high-capacity EPS conduits to the shield generators. If desired, the shields can be augmented by power from the impulse propulsion power plants. The shields can protect against an unheard of 72% of the total EM spectrum whereas the Sovereign-class starship is equipped to protect against only about 36%. This is made possible by the improvement on multi-phase graviton polarity flux technology incorporated into the improved regenerative shielding and the LaForge Metaphasic Program 1 integrated into the system.

Frequency range: Shielding protects fully over 72% of the EM spectrum

Range:The shields, when raised, extend ten meters from the hull. This shielding can be extended at great energy expenditure to envelope another starship or object within a kilometer of the starship.
Primary purpose:Defense from enemy threat forces, hazardous radiation, and space particles
Secondary purpose:Ramming threat vehicles; protecting allied vehicles and installations

        ABLATIVE ARMOR

Originally developed in 2367 during the Defiant Class Development Project, ablative armor is still considered to be a significant breakthrough in starship defense by effectively creating a beam-retardant layer that greatly increases a ship's life expectancy in battle. Originally deployed only on ships of the Defiant class, ablative armor showed remarkable dispersion properties against various beam-type energy weapons, including the various types of phaser, disruptor, polaron, and focused-plasma beams employed by nearly all threat races. The armor works by first dispersing incoming beam energy across the hull of the ship where, after reaching an undisclosed threshold, causes part of the armor to boil away, taking with it a large fraction of that energy. The effect also creates a modest vapor cloud, which effectively disperses the incoming beam further, causing it to do less direct damage to the hull.  It should be noted, however, that the armor is not a hull replacement, but a supplement and must be replaced over time due to the boiling away process and cannot be replaced if the hull itself has been destroyed.

Basic modern tactical necessities had Starfleet Command request that the ablative armor be used to supplement the defenses of all new ship classes.Initially considered to supplement the majority of starship classes, production complications and long fabrication time makes the usage of the armor limited to warships and high-risk classes, resulting in only limited usage around vulnerable areas of Galaxy and Akira-class starships and almost-total body coverage of the Defiant, Sovereign and Odyssey. Encounters with the Borg had already proven their ability to penetrate Federation shielding on, at that point, two occasions - the U.S.S. Enterprise-D's encounter at system J-25 and again at Wolf 359. It was then only natural that the design team saw to keep it for the Millenium design of the Millenium class, with this additional layer of defense should the Borg, the Undine or any other threat races encountered accross time, space and other dimensions find a means of penetrating the energy shielding, or whe energy shield would be detected in an era where it was not supposed to exist as in the 22nd century NX-01 era.

Each Millenium-class vessel is equiped with an average depth of 10 centimeters of armor hull-wide, which can be replaced as wear permits at select fleetyards. Due to the supply demands, repairs made to the hull of a starship in the field will lack the extra layer of armor until the vessel is able to dock at a facility with spare plating. That is why, with its extra power output and efficiency, the Millenium class was also equiped with the ablative regenerative armor first tested on the USS Voyager and extensively proven in the field by the USS Lotus and USS McKenzie of Lotus Fleet, as the transdimensional starship would be expected to find itself isolated for extended periods without adequate support.

        ABLATIVE REGENERATIVE ARMOR

Ablative Regenerating Armor (ARA) relies on industrial replicators arrayed along the outer hull much like the shield emitters to fabricate a new protective covering. However, here their energies serve to replicate ablative armor hull plating all over the entire external surface of the starship. The energy requirements are much less demanding than as for standard shield operations to be sure, but the system requires a significant supply of replicating material to operate, especially once the covering is destroyed by enemy fire or environemental hazards and needs to be replaced. The sheer size of the Millenium class certainly allows for such material to be stocked for this use in the cargo hold, but it also means that such defense is nevertheless limited in use. It also has the tactical disadvantage of covering all phaser strips, limiting then the vessel to torpedoes cannons and mines as offensive systems as long as the ARA is in operation.

Because of the peculiar tactical necessities of a ship called upon to enter other unknown universes as the Millenium class is, adding regenerative armor on top of standard covering and improved shielding was also deemed mandatory for a transdimensional starship sent to face unknown realities and conditions, especially when the use of energy defensive systems would betray the true nature of the ship, like during the late 21st and early 22nd century.

        TACTICAL SENSORS

There are twenty-five independent tactical sensors on an Millenium class. Each sensor automatically tracks and locks onto incoming hostile vessels and reports bearing, aspect, distance, and vulnerability percentage to the tactical station on the main bridge. Each tactical sensor is approximately 95% efficient against ECM, and can operate fairly well in particle flux nebulae (which has been hitherto impossible).

The suite of tactical sensors aboard the Millenium class is the most technically advanced suite of tactical sensors found on a Starfleet vessel. With twenty-five independent sensor arrays, backed by the processing power of her computer network, a Millenium class vessel can not only wage battle, but conduct and lead other Starfleet and Allied vessels in tactical engagements. A Millenium class vessel can track and maintain sensor locks on over 500 threat and friendly vessels within its sensor envelopes. Further, the Millenium class can process and collect tactical data at much greater ranges than any starship before her, thanks in part to the redundancy of the arrays, but also the computing power and efficiency of her sensor systems and the sophistication of its main computer and the holographic situational display on the main bridge.

        Tactical Sensors

        •  Number: 25
        • Type: Multi-Modal MKII
        • Range: 20 Light-years

PEL WARNING SYSTEM: a return to the 23rd century automated shield activation system, the program developped by the Ferengi science officer of the Lotus Fleet warship USS Alsea is now a standard on all Lotus Fleet ship and the USS Millenium. When sensors detect a potential cosmic hazard like a subspace fracture or a direct threat like a weapons lock, the program sends immediately the ship into the most appropriate evasive maneuver and raise shields. This system is much effective against unpredictable spatial dangers and surprise attacks as long as sensors can detect them.

        VARIABLE MODE CONFIGURATION

In its default Regeneration Mode, the Millenium's structure features an integrated saucer and hull. The ship has a pair of deflector dishes integrated into the bottom of the saucer. Two nacelles are attached to short level pylons extending from the rear of the hull. Each nacelle is separated by a short pylon that retracts when in subspace, pulling together to form a more compact appearance less susceptible to sensor detection.

The ship's Bridge Officer layout also increases the ship's versatility. Its Universal Holographic Stations allow the crew to unlock high-end Engineering, Tactical, and Science ressources, making the Millenium a jack-of-all-trades, able to take on multiple roles (sometimes even in mid-mission).Hence why it was uniquely well-suited to be converted into the first transdimensional timeship.

When in N Space, the Millenium's pylons angle upwards, like those of a classic cruiser design to ensure a stable warp field. The nacelles extend to double their length for warpfield efficiency against polluting hazards and for readiness to implement the QSD drive, be it for interstellar or transdimensional travel.

        ADDITIONAL SYSTEMS

External Holographic Matrix: To miniminize problems during temporal travels, the Millenium with external holographic projectors, an idea borrowed from the 22nd century incident with early contact with the Romulans. It allows the ship to take the appearance and sensor signature of any ship with data registered in its database; it can also appear as a natural phenomenon like an asteroid or a particle cloud. The energy output required however does not allow for regenerative Armor or weapons fire except torpedoes on manual and only minimal shields as the power output of the ship would possibly give it away.

Internal Holographic Matrix: As is now standard on all newly built ships, holoemitters are distributed throughout all the decks with hardwired safeties and memory purge to avoid both fatal ''safeties off'' injuries and spontaneous emergence of sentience. The priority use is for allowing the EMH program to act throughout the vessel in any emergency, even on all decks at once. it also allows free movement to the ship's computer avatar. It can also be used to turn the entire ship into one vast holodeck to prevent any aunothorized being on board to be revealed the true nature of the ship. Thus, someone seing the ship as a Bird of Prey and beaming aboard would find himself inside a Bird of Prey, complete with Klingon warriors and even the distinctive aroma prevalent on board such a ship.

These two systems are installed in accordance with The Temporal Directive Number 1 to minimze altering the timeline or the normal developpement of another universe.

Personal Inertial Dampers: Conceived by former Artemis chief engineer Anthony T. Jackson, these are personal deployable harnesses that can be worn like a belt buckle (lookin somewhat like the old biomonitors of the era of the Constitution refit uniforms). On hand activation or if a preprogrammed sudden jolt occurs, the system deploy ''safety-belts'' type harness that envelops the wearer with a dampening forcefield nullifying inertial variances and sudden decompression and providing a limited amount of life support (one hour) even in total vacuum like the old experimental life support belt of the 23rd century. The PID is also integrated into all the engineering hazard suits, security armor and hazmatsuits on board.

Nanite System Enhancement: developped and tested on the USS Phoenix of Lotus Fleet, the injected nanites into a gel-pack equiped power grid or data grid will enhance such system by up to 20% over established performance specs and provide protection against interference and automatic emergency repair in case of damage to such system, much like the immune system of a living organism, as long as power flows through the system.

Navigational Deflector: Another advancement developed for the Millenium class was a new breed of navigational deflectors, the Aegis graviton deflector Array system. A team of scientists developed this new type of deflector technology based on research both on recovered weapons from enemies such as the Borg and the collaborative efforts of scientists from many allied species. Unique, at this point to the Millenium class, the navigational array has a much higher stress tolerance to High-Warp and High-Energy discharges than any navigational array before it. This is, in part, to the increased number of graviton polarity generators, but also due to the amount of power provided to the assembly itself.

Without some sort of deflector system, space travel at high velocities, let alone warp speeds, would be impossible due to collisions with objects ranging from stray hydrogen atoms to large planetary fragments. Vessels of the Millenium class make use of a single, large, main navigation deflector located at the forward-most part of the engineering hull, with quad subspace field distortion amplifiers. Composed of molybdenum/duranium mesh panels over a duranium framework, the dish can be manually moved 8.5° in any direction off the ship's Z-axis. The main deflector dish's subspace field and sensor power comes from six high-generating graviton polarity generators, each capable of generating two hundred megawatts which feed into the four 650 millicochrane subspace field distortion amplifiers.A backup deflector is located on the ventral side of the primary hull, on deck 2, and in addition to its role as a backup, the secondary deflector serves to reinforce the ship's warp field at speeds exceeding Warp 8.5.

Originally seen as a means to augment the warp field due to technological limitations in graviton field generation during the development of the pathfinder vehicle, the saucer deflector is actually identical to the primary deflector of the Defiant class and is more or less a carry-over in the design process.

One other unique property of the Aegis deflector is the inherent synergy between the deflector and the corresponding Aegis Engine and shield system. The Aegis Graviton Deflector Array provides a variety of improvements to shields, providing added protection to the vessel along with the standard benefits of any Deflector Array by sending continuous deflector pulses to reinforce shielding on a constant basis, instead of needing to be ordered, because of the extremely efficient energy use and low consumption of all those systems when linked together.

The deflector is also configured to act like a kind of "space sonar", sending tachyon pulses in the forward arc to greatly amplify sensor resolution. Developped by USS Artemis science officer Syntron of Lotus Fleet, this improvement significantly augment sensor penetration in difficult conditions like inside dense nebula matter and can effectively pinpoint any type of cloaked vessel, including the advanced Reman type and phase-shifted ones in conjuction with the quantum navigational sensor.

The catamaran configuration of the Millenium class inspired by his Loknar ancestor provides the ship with not one but two main deflectors, which allows for increased navigational capabilities especially in dense atmospheres and star coronas, the dischage of energy dissipators and of the ship-covering holographic system without loss of deflector capabilities.

                Type: Molybdenum & Duranium Mesh

        • Power: Two Graviton Polarity Generators with Achilles-type ''repulsor'' anti-ramming field
        • Output: 256 Gigawatts; used as a space sonar, can provide full sensor capability in a 90 degrees frontal arc up to 80% of EM and particle interference.

Number: 2, able to work together to double deflector power or independently each as a standard deflector dish.

        • Field Strength: 550 Millicochranes

        COMMAND SYSTEMS

        MAIN BRIDGE

General Overview:Primary operational control of the Millenium class is provided by the main bridge, located at the top of the primary hull. It is located on Deck 1. The main bridge directly supervises all primary mission operations (with the assistance of the Flightbay for the integrated assorted auxilliary crafts) and coordinates all departmental activities.

Layout: The primary bridge configuration of the new Millenium class mostly follows the standard bridge designs for fleetwide application in newer starships, adding a few specific modifications called for by its unique operational parameters. The central area of the Main Bridge provides seating and information displays for the Captain and two other officers. The Captain’s Chair is raised from the rest of the bridge officers'ones, to that of the surrounding level which includes Science, Engineering, Navigation, Tactical, Security, Communications and Operations. The two Officer seats each side of the command chair are equiped with fully programmable consoles for a variety of uses.

Directly fore of the command area is the Flight Control Officer, who faces the main viewer. The FCO is equiped with a console that proceeds around his seating position in a semi-circle leading to two operational stations most needed in coordinated actions like combat and hazard situations.

To the starboard side of the Flight Officer, also facing the main viewer, is the Operations manager's console - which is identical in size and design to the Helm station. The Operations Panel, due to the tremendous amount of sensitive information found there, has security protocols as stringent as the TAC consoles, which are located on the port side of the FCO station with all defensive and offensive systems controls there.

To the port side is the primary Tactical station also facing the main viewer. This station allows the tactical officer to control the ship's phasers, EDBs, torpedo launchers, regenerative armor and shields. Due to the sensitive nature of this terminal, it is restricted to personnel with a Level 4 security clearance, and like all consoles on the bridge requires a security verification to be initalized.

Flight control, Ops and tactical are all linked together as one crescent-shaped console. The three-in-one station unique to this design provide instant coordination between flight, tactical and operations of the ship, optimizing coordination and response time during alerts without even needs for verbal communications. In exceptional circumstances, it also allows one officer to manage all three stations alone, providing effectiveness even in situations with minimal crew availability.
At the very front of the bridge chamber is a large viewscreen. This main viewer performs all the standard duties expected of it. However, the viewscreen is not always activated unlike most other starships. It is a full Holographic display, that can be activated upon request. When the screen is not active, a standard bulkhead is present. This addition was initially made into the Sovereign class, so that Starfield syndrome among Bridge officers would be prevented. Too many officers became hypnotized during warp, which led to dangerous unresponsiveness in sudden, critical situations. Aft of the bridge however can be found an even larger and more detailed holographic situation display that is always active.

Aft and to the left of the command area is an elevated platform on which is located the engineering control station (comprised of two consoles, one for the chief engineer and one for his assistant) while on the right can be found the same arrangement for the Science department with primary sensor and computer controls operated there.

Also located there is the large engineering console. This has a smaller cutaway diagram of the vessel, which displays all engineering-relevant data and shows warp fields and engine output. This console also has priority links to the computers, QSD propulsion system, the WPS (Warp Propulsion System), the IPS (Impulse Propulsion System), navigation, SIF, and IDF. Like the other bridge stations for their respective head of departments, the Chief Engineer can here bring this console to full Enable mode by entering voice codes and undergoing a retinal scan. Directly aft of this console is the Engineering II console, which is fully programmable to run any Secondary Console function, including Sciences, Medical, Operations, Limited Helm control, or Security.

Against the port side walls of the main bridge are the consoles for Sciences along with others that are programmable for a multitude of functions. There are two Science consoles with Science 2 being a fully programmable multi-mission Console. Science I, which is the primary science console, has priority links to Conn, Ops, Computers, and Tactical. The Science I console is located directly to the Captain's left.

Science II is the ASO's (Assistant Science Officer's) console, which can be used by any personnel. Science II has access to all science, navigational, sensor, and communications systems. Science II can be configured to operate in tandem with Science I, although security links and all other non-science data is withheld from Science II. Science II usually works independently of Science I, and is located to the starboard of the main station.

To the Captain's right, behind him, is the Security station of the bridge. Located here are three additional, fully-programmable multi-mission consoles. On the left side parallel to security is the tactical center control also equiped with three additional fully-programmable multi-mission consoles and the holocamouflage controls. Located also against the aft wall of the bridge is a large master systems display monitor, similar to the one in main engineering. All relative ship information (such as damage, power distribution, etc.) is displayed on the cutaway image of the vessel. This monitor can be used to direct ship operations and can be configured for limited flight control if necessary.

This console, as does every console on the bridge, also has the hand-input sub-console for use in setting the auto-Destruct of the vessel. The auto-destruct sequence follows Standard Starfleet security procedures which can be accessed via any secured Memory Alpha ODN connection. because of the unique mission parameters of this vessel, the self-destruct system is exceptionally secured and at the same time easily activated with the proper identification and codes and can ultimately be implemented by the computer itself.

There is one turbolift on the bridge that can handle normal transit around the Millenium class. There is also an emergency ladder that connects the bridge to Deck 3. In addition, there is one door, on the aft platform of the bridge, that leads to the Conference Room, which is aft of the Main Bridge past the Situation Room. Other connected rooms to the Main Bridge include the Captain's Ready Room and the captain's quarters, and senior officers quarters accessible from deck 2 via a curving ramp. The design called for main bridge officers and especially the commanding officer of the ship to be able to quickly get to the bridge at all times and in all circumstances, including complete power shutdown or bridge lock-out.

Behind the bridge proper and before the conference room/captain's table/ observation deck, with the ready room on one side and the turbolift and the captain's quarters with the access ramp, is found the Situation Room. Essentially a miniaturized version of the stellar cartography bay found in other modern large cruisers, it can process similarly all space-time data and tactical or mission parameters for officers to study in real time or recorded simulation while still able to command the ship. The display is constantly in operation and monitored by the main computer so as to provide constant relevant data to the officers regarding the most complex and delicate operations this ship is designed to be tasked with. Using the time-protected circuitry T-MKII, it can maintain the projection of the main timeline even in the event of temporal alterations and provide references to it and any relevant alteration in the space-time continuum. When not on duty on the bridge or with the captain, the captain's yeoman android AI interface works there.

At the very aft of deck 1 is the Captain's Observation Deck configured as the main conference room for senior officers. The fore wall is a large viewing screen and computer interface while the aft wall offers a wide transparency looking out into space behind the ship. A replicator and a multipurpose work station are located at each end while the center is occupied by a triangular conference table with a holographic projector and tridimensional computer interface in the middle of it. When not used for duty meetings, the table and chairs, also holographic, reconfigure into plush chairs and sofas with a gaming table between them, or into a dining table for the captain and his chosen guests.

There are no escape pods connected to the bridge. Pods are located on all decks below Deck 2. One pod is reserved for the top four officers in the chain of command on the Millenium Class, because they are the last four to leave the ship. Another is for all the serving bridge officers. These are located on Deck 2. As the number of experienced captains dwindles in Starfleet, the notion of a captain going down with his ship has been abolished. If the ship is abandoned, the top four officers in the chain of command will wait until everyone else is off the ship, arm the auto-Destruct (which in such circumstances might very well be necessary), and then leave in the escape pod.

In such extreme circumstances, the entire main computer core can also be ejected, similar to warp core ejection, encased within its own lifepod equiped with shuttlecraft-type warp and impulse engines. This allows survival of the artificial intelligence and the means for it to escape and hide until it can be either retrieved or wait for the proper opportunity to send a distress signal.

        SCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING SYSTEMS

        SENSOR SYSTEMS

The primary long range and navigation sensor system is located behind each 0ne of the main deflector dishes, primarily to avoid sensor "ghosts" and other detrimental effects consistent with deflector dish millicochrane static field output,as well as provide a safe haven for the system within the engineering hull. An additional suite is located behind the saucer deflector dish, and although more limited, can be used in emergency situations should the primary system become damaged or fail. The two systems are not designed to work in concert, due to the complexities involved in maintaining a subspace field capable of allowing two independent deflector beams to pass through.

On the catamaran design of the Millenium class, the standard capabilities of starships is her doubled as the twin hull each sport it's own assembly that can function independently or in conjuction for added power and resolution.

Lateral sensor pallets are located around the rim of the entire starship, providing full coverage in all standard scientific fields, but with emphasis in the following areas:

        1. Temporal variances and phenomena
        2. Quantum frequencies and phenomena
        3. Astronomical phenomena
        4. Planetary analysis
        5. Remote life-form analysis
        6. EM scanning
        7. Passive neutrino scanning
        8. Parametric subspace field stress (a scan to search for cloaked ships)
        9. Thermal variances
        10. Quasi-stellar material

Each sensor pallet (one-hundred and ninety in all, excluding the tactical-dedicated ones) can be interchanged and re-calibrated with any other pallet on the ship. The storage of additional is handled in the secondary shuttlebay, where adjustments and repairs can be made. Modified shuttlepods are used to remove and attach sensor pallets throughout the ship's hull. Additional sensor pallets are located on both the dorsal and ventral portions of the ship, allowing for greater coverage in the Z+ and Z- ranges.

Warp Current sensor:This is an independent subspace graviton field-current scanner, allowing vessels to track ships at high warp by locking onto the eddy currents from another ship's warp field. The main computer can then extrapolate from a database the probable size and class of the ship by comparing warp field output to known archetypes.

Quantum field Focus Controller: this special system allows the ship to keep shields , regeberative armor and communications online during slipstream travel. Also, it c
an be used to divert power from Phasers and shields to the main deflection system to create a shield bubble, or high intensity phaser beam as long as power is available to the deflector array

Multidimensional wave-function analysis module: An experimental system on the Millenium class starship to detect interdimensional rifts in subspace and temporal distortions in space up to 23 light years away. The system also produces a multidimensional graviton shield which can reverse the effects of a dimensional wormhole.

Chroniton Integrator: During Slipstream operation the Chroniton Intergrator is able to get sensor readings several seconds into the future. This prevents the ship from running into any possible obstacle like a quantum anomaly during slipstream travel.

Spatial Sonar Sensor: A special modification of the main deflector grid to produce focalised echo-type subspace signals able to locate subpatial, out of phase or cloaked objects and phenomenon developped by science officer Syntron on the original USS Artemis. It requires however the ship to directly face the seeked out target to receive a positive signal and can be reverse-read by the target as well, giving also the location of the emitting ship.

        STELLAR CARTOGRAPHY
One stellar cartography bay on deck 1 with direct EPS power feed from engineering. All information is directed to the bridge and can be displayed on any console or the main viewscreen. The Chief Science Officer's office is located next to the Stellar Cartography bay. It is as impressive or large as the original Galaxy-class Stellar Cartography Bay design, the emphasis on the design was one of function over form.

The Situational display on the bridge level is a smaller version of this system; it is less able to record, analyse and store data but more geared to real time representation and data retrieval like the astrometrics lab, combining therefore the functions of both for sensor work of a non scientific nature. it can therefore serve as a secondary astrometrics lab when the main one is unavailable.

        ASTROMETRICS LAB
This specific-study cosmological research facility closely resembles the original Intrepid-class Stellar Cartography bay and is directly linked to the much larger Stellar caartography bay accross the corridor, feeding it with all data, analysis and research on a continuous basis.

An advancement in integrated data processing, the Astrometrics Laboratory brings with it technological refinements used first aboard the USS Voyager. Served directly by the auxiliary computer core, the Astrometrics Lab conceivably has the largest single processing potential of any single laboratory aboard ship except for Stellar Cartography. Facilities include multiple multi-use consoles, control facilities, a large wraparound viewscreen and a centrally placed dais with holo emitter.

All information is directed to the bridge and can be displayed on any console or the main viewscreen. When under warp or staffed by demand, the Astrometrics Laboratory is manned by one supervising officer and as many as eight subordinates.

Astrometrics can also serves the functions of Stellar Cartography needs of the main Stellar cartography bay is unavailable.

        SCIENCE LABS
The emphasis on the Millenium class is exploration of other time periods and other dimensions and realities beyond normal space-time. Thus, the vessel is equiped with a generous amount of scientific research space - in keeping with the mandate of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. There are five state-of-the-art science labs on the Millenium class; eight labs are adjacent to Sickbay along with eight multifunction labs on deck 8. The labs are bio-chem-physics labs that can also be reconfigured for Medical labs. The labs on deck 8 are a mixed batch; three are bio-chem-physics, three are XT (extra-terrestrial) analysis labs, three eugenic labs and one astrophysics-planetology lab. There are eight smaller labs on deck 6, which can be configured for astrophysics/astrometrics and stellar cartography studies or for special technological research.

        PROBES
A probe is a device that contains a number of general purpose or mission specific sensors and can be launched from a starship for closer examination of objects in space.

There are nine different classes of probes, which vary in sensor types, power, and performance ratings. The spacecraft frame of a probe consists of molded duranium-tritanium and pressure-bonded lufium boronate, with sensor windows of triple layered transparent aluminum. With a warhead attached, a probe becomes a photon torpedo. The standard equipment of all nine types of probes are instruments to detect and analyze all normal EM and subspace bands, organic and inorganic chemical compounds, atmospheric constituents, and mechanical force properties. All nine types are capable of surviving a powered atmospheric entry, but only three are special designed for aerial maneuvering and soft landing. These ones can also be used for spatial burying. Many probes can be real-time controlled and piloted from a starship to investigate an environment that is dangerous, hostile, or otherwise inaccessible for an away-team or starship.
